Hi everyone, my name is Tom Roussey & I’m a reporter for WJLA, the ABC station in the Washington, DC area. I focus on transportation – public transit like Metro, airports, bikes, roads – but I cover a bit of everything. Like most of us I’m new to Bluesky. I’ll post about news & my love of books too.
Northbound 14th St NW closed between L St & Thomas Circle after DC Water discovered an abandoned brick sewer line in danger of collapse. DC Water tells me it should’ve been filled with concrete when it was abandoned 50 years ago but wasn’t. Sidewalks & southbound lane still open.

Riding the Metro over the Potomac on a freezing cold night in DC. Not a lot of people on the train tonight, I think the windchill of -3° right now is keeping a lot of people from going out. #wmata

DMV officials are warning drivers to be extra careful as roads are still not back to normal, and many merge areas like the one at this exit from DCA onto Route 1 are still mostly covered in snow. If you go out into traffic too fast you could hit someone.

Trucks are hauling snow & ice cleared from city streets to this parking lot in Rock Creek Park. DDOT says they’ll likely run out of space here tomorrow, but RFK should have enough room to handle the rest of the cleanup, which is expected to take at least the rest of this week.ll

There is still a lot of work to do, but DC city leaders say they are making progress clearing streets. This is work along I St. NW not far from the White House.

Trying out Seattle’s Link light rail system today! Feels kind of like Metro and the future Maryland Purple Line had a child together - it runs on overhead wires like light rail, but so far feels & moves more like Metrorail than a light rail train. #wmata #Link

Being used to Metro I’m always interested in trying out public transportation in other cities. Right now I am on Portland, Oregon’s MAX Red Line light rail. Just like with #wmata I could pay with a credit card, which helped since I only made the train by about a minute.

Today the NTSB gave @7NewsDC a rare behind the scenes tour of their labs in DC. Among other things, they can recover data from damaged recorders, and also use an electron microscope to make a surface appear 50,000 times larger so they can study where cracks developed.

The Maryland Transit Administration says construction on the future Purple Line light rail system is now 87% done. That said, it’s still expected to be about two years until it opens. It was originally supposed to open in 2022. Pics are near the College Park Metro.

The Metro Transit Police chief is talking with Metro’s board about 2025 crime numbers. He says the crime rate was the lowest it has been in 25 years. He says they’ve put a lot of focus on reducing crime & fare evasion on Metrobus; Metrorail crime fell also. #wmata

I covered the return of the Yellow Line to Greenbelt for a news story this past week, then just happened to get on a Metro train going to Greenbelt on my day off today. Reminder, every other Yellow train now goes to Greenbelt, the others still stop at Mount Vernon Square. #wmata

I am riding the first Yellow Line train to Greenbelt in more than two years. As of today every other Yellow Line train will go to Greenbelt again, but be careful to check your train’s destination, because the other 50% will still end at Mt. Vernon Square. #wmata
