Hi everyone, my name is Tom Roussey & I’m a reporter for WJLA, the ABC station in the Washington, DC area. I focus on transportation – public transit like Metro, airports, bikes, roads – but I cover a bit of everything. Like most of us I’m new to Bluesky. I’ll post about news & my love of books too.
JUST IN: VDOT & Transurban have announced November 22 will be the day a new Express Lanes extension will open on the Beltway between the Dulles Toll Road & GW Parkway. The opening date is the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
November 10, 2025 at 9:20 PM
Things have improved a lot at DCA since yesterday & especially since Friday, however the airport has still seen more than 80 cancellations of arriving or departing flights today, which is more than double what both Dulles and BWI have seen so far.
November 10, 2025 at 8:39 PM
This is from FlightAware, showing that so far today Reagan National Airport has seen more cancellations than any other airport in the world. Staffing shortages have combined with new FAA restrictions that began today to cause an absolute mess.
November 7, 2025 at 11:21 PM
Of the 3 major airports in the DC area, DCA is hurting the most today, and it's not even close - 130 cancellations per FlightAware!
Dulles & BWI Marshall have 22 each.
Today new FAA restrictions began, but this morning DCA had similar numbers to BWI/IAD - we're looking into this.
November 7, 2025 at 9:29 PM
There are already a lot of flight delays on the board at BWI Marshall tonight even though new flight traffic restrictions by the FAA don’t go into effect until tomorrow. Southwest has seen a lot of delays here and at Reagan National today.

BREAKING: List obtained by ABC News shows BWI Marshall, Dulles & Reagan National are among the 40 airports where the FAA will cut 10% of flight traffic starting Friday. The FAA is doing this because of the shutdown's impact on air traffic controllers.

BREAKING: Winsome Earle-Sears concedes in the Virginia governor’s race: “I think I learn more in a loss than I ever do in victory.” Says she called Abigail Spanberger & left her a voicemail when she didn’t answer: “She didn’t have to answer. ..I think she’s busy.”

This is the scene at the election night party for Republican Winsome Earle-Sears in Leesburg. The Associated Press just called the governor’s race in Virginia for her Democratic opponent Abigail Spanberger.

As the government shutdown enters month two, the FAA says it's seeing a surge in callouts from air traffic controllers heading into the weekend.
For 2 straight days Reagan National has had staffing issues, per @flightaware there were 479 delays Thursday and 209 as of late Friday.
November 1, 2025 at 3:25 AM
For the second straight day Reagan National Airport is seeing delays the FAA attributes to "staffing." Dulles has dealt with a lot of delays also but wind rather than staffing was blamed.
October 31, 2025 at 11:05 PM
This morning Dulles Airport has a ground stop, but unlike Reagan National yesterday, it is not because of staffing per the FAA, but it is because of the strong winds in the area right now.
October 31, 2025 at 2:56 PM
Reagan National Airport had a ground stop that has now been cancelled, but the FAA says delays are still averaging an hour and a half due to "staffing." #DCA

BREAKING: VDOT announces the extension of the 495 Express Lanes between the Dulles Toll Road & GW Parkway will open in late November. VDOT & Transurban still aren't giving an exact date, but say the toll lanes will open "ahead of holiday travel."

NEW: A group called DMVMoves, which has been meeting more than a year, passed a plan calling for increased funding to help Metro w/future needs like a new rail signaling system. Lot of work still to be done - local governments still have to come up with how to pay for it. #wmata
October 29, 2025 at 6:31 PM
After receiving a partial paycheck two weeks ago, today air traffic controllers did not receive any paycheck at all due to the government shutdown. Today at Reagan National & other U.S. airports, they handed out flyers and asked travelers for help in calling on Congress to end the shutdown.
October 29, 2025 at 12:47 AM
Metro says some of its rail signaling equipment is so old, the wires crumble and fall apart when they try to work on it. Wednesday #wmata will ask a group of DMV leaders to approve a plan for extra funding for rail signaling & other projects: wjla.com/news/local/w...

The military is doing a series of flyovers over DC right now, just captured this video from Reagan National Airport.
October 28, 2025 at 3:55 PM
Metro gave us a tour of one of its original train control rooms at Farragut North. #wmata says rooms like this would largely go away if it could get funding to replace its signaling system. Many things in this room date to the 1970s & many of the parts aren’t even made anymore.

Second straight night of evening rush-hour traffic mayhem in DC related to road closures for the Zelenskyy visit
October 17, 2025 at 10:01 PM
Even for DC, traffic anywhere close Georgetown is absolutely horrific tonight, there was Secret Service activity & MPD said the Key Bridge would be closed throughout rush hour. My coworker & I finally abandoned the area completely and are heading north and way out of our way.
October 16, 2025 at 11:05 PM
Avoid Georgetown and anywhere near it at all costs if you are driving! Per WTOP Secret Service apparently closed some roads and it is absolute chaos and I am stuck in it with my coworker 😬

BREAKING: The Transportation Planning Board did not approve a Virginia plan to extend Express Lanes from Springfield to the National Harbor area. There was a lot of opposition from Prince George’s Co. TPB voted to allow VDOT to try again in the future but it has “work to do.”
