As we approach midnight, FlightAware reports a total of 158 cancellations either to or from DCA Friday along with 365 delays, many of which were hours long.
BWI & Dulles did not have the same staffing problems and only saw 22 cancellations each.

Per the FAA this has been the status of Reagan National for hours now, can't remember the last time I saw average delays of four hours.

The FAA says the average delay at Reagan National Airport right now is four hours!
The FAA says the reason is staffing, which is causing issues at DCA that go way beyond the impact of new flight traffic reductions that started today at 40 airports nationwide.

United has a hub at Dulles, and says it will not cut "hub to hub" flights, i.e. between Dulles and hubs like San Francisco or Newark. Also says it won't cut long international flights, but it will reduce some regional & domestic flights.

The only answer about the purpose of the flyover so far has come from a spokesman for the DC mayor’s office, who says the flyover was related to the Navy’s 250th anniversary celebration this month.

As far as why they did this, I'm still trying to confirm, but they appeared to be the Navy Blue Angels, which referred us to the White House when we asked them why they did it. It appears the plane hanging back may have been filming the others but no one has said for sure.
