After the earthquake that hit Syria in February 2023, I made a donation to the White Helmets under the name of a Tumblr tankie who'd been smearing the org as "Al-Qaeda" for many years. On December 8th, 2024, I hit her up with the receipt:

Among many problems this gives people who know STEM but who suck at teaching STEM a permission structure to never improve.
i've mostly experienced it as the even worse version where everyone already innately can Do Humanities just as well as the pros, but math/sciences is difficult and requires a lot of natural talent AND learning to be able to understand it.

No, no, no. What we need to do is take one of the Orcas we kept imprisoned at Sea World, teach him how to use Excel, release him, and then give him 10-15 years to cook.

Loved joining fellow singers for this huge vocal arrangement organized by the wonderful @envatilea.bsky.social! Listen to the whole thing, as nothing is more powerful than the unity of singing voices. Long notes? Who?

I think a lot of people romanticise pre-2018 Tumblr to an absurd degree because I remember that place being absolutely infested by pro-self-harm/eating disorder propaganda

It may well be true that even the most virtuous leaders cannot make an unfair system very much better in the short to medium term. But OTOH we're seeing now that when your leaders are all total bastards, they can make things dramatically *worse* at dizzying speeds.

I think it codes as naive to modern people when they read about pre-modern value systems that emphasize personal morality and virtue in politicians and public figures.

We understand now that no amount of personal virtue can balance out the cruelty of an unfair system.

But is that the whole story?

I think this is true but it’s also even worse than this: by doing this I think what elites have inadvertently selected for is malicious low cunning and the willingness to use it as a weapon.
The paradox of the elite is that their most sought-after quality is “smart.” But they’re mostly not smart enough to tell if someone is smart.

One consequence of this is that elite spaces are dominated by people who have learned to sound smart to non-smart people, often by saying stupid things.
and the thing that comes across from the correspondence is this guy is just a fucking gross moron! I don't mean the spelling and punctuation - there's zero content there, his grasp of everything is at best shallow and normally outright nonsense.

Computers were a skill. They were taught in classrooms as a skill. Skills give you power over your tools because you work them as an expert and that is leverage to multiply externally.

And then computers became an A/B tested telemetry-based advertising conduit to brains for SaaS recurring revenue.

Obviously the worst part of murdering 600,000 people as your genocidal revenge for the fall of Apartheid is the murdering 600,000 people as your genocidal revenge for the fall of Apartheid, but to do it with a Reddit meme older than the kids you killed gets you an extra ten degrees of heat in hell.
One analytical model shows that, as of November 5th, the dismantling of U.S.A.I.D. has already caused the deaths of 600,000 people, two-thirds of them children. https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/jUzNSc

Project Gutenberg is one of those places that exemplifies what the internet was initially all about: studying, preserving, and celebrating the arts, especially the written word, and Greg Newby was a huge part of that.

Thank you, Greg, and rest well.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of Greg Newby, who led Project Gutenberg ( @gutenberg.org ) with passion and purpose. Greg’s belief in free and open access to knowledge continues to inspire us and so many others working to preserve our shared culture online. gutenberg.org/about/newby....

I feel lots of things that felt like, were billed as, self-actualization read in retrospect as canaries in the coal mine for the fraying commitments we owe to each other as members of a society.
Relatedly, I recall a lot of "the joy of canceling plans" jokes and memes from the 2010s and now folks are talking about a loneliness epidemic, and, well...
People will scoff at virtue signaling and then wonder why today’s billionaires don’t build museums, libraries, hospitals, and universities like Gilded Age ones did.
