Defender of the em dash. Tell me about your favorite map painting game.
This is a legitimate feeling, but I think it gets the causality backwards. Landlords can extract huge rents because we have made it so hard to build! Increase supply, drive prices down, and you’re shifting bargaining power back in favor of the renters.
As of late this is what's becoming apparent to me. If the success of the private market is so contingent on instability for current renters, then maybe we shouldn't be relying so much on the private market to build.
Right, but if you do rent control you can’t count on the private sector building the housing for you. So any rent control policy that isn’t paired with an enormous public housing investment is going to be counterproductive.

My wokest opinion is that there shouldn’t be any private high schools or elementary schools.

Education is a matter of the common public good and everyone at the K-12 level should have an equal opportunity with the same resources to attain a common educational baseline.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

Uhh holy shit
Can we circle back to the part where the NY Times never disclosed that they have incriminating information on Donald Trump from sent by Epstein that's been sitting on their email servers for nearly a decade?
Stuff like this makes me wonder why there hasn't been any reporting about Trump having affairs during his presidencies

serious note: they're gonna try 5x harder to sabotage the midterms after tonight and we're gonna have to organize on a literally historic scale to stop them

What's happening is that these commentators adopt Republican talking points about the Democratic agenda. That's it, that's the whole story. Their source of information about Democrats and Democratic priorities is Republicans and Republican-aligned media

These candidates actually existed.

The Democratic Party actually had a platform. Ezra Douthglesias could still go read it. They choose not to, or to pretend it didn't exist: www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/20....

Preregistering a take: within a month, right-wing media will pivot to talking about how the government has been shut down for X days and yet the world still spins, ergo the federal government isn’t needed anyways.

It's insane that this even needs to be said.

The primary sins of bad analysis like this are imo:

1. A refusal to engage with issue salience
2. A refusal to engage with how issues can become salient or unsalient
3. A refusal to engage with how leaders can shape issue salience and public opinion

It treats all issues as frozen in amber.
according to matty's reading of this we should uh, drop opposition to offshore drilling, ban urbanism and anything dense, fund the military and police more, and restore the death penalty?

This really is it. If you live in a metro area with an inelastic housing stock you will see no benefit from low unemployment and higher wages, you'll just see higher housing prices. No progressive economic project can work until housing is fixed.
I am stubborn I still think Bidenomics was correct and it worked! People experienced lifestyle creep and depression, and/or lived in NYC where housing costs genuinely got untethered for completely separate reasons!

But when it comes to it, if it comes to it, in that awful moment of decision, yes, you will want the old grandmas and grandpas at the front, as many of them as you can get, so those terribly young fellows with the rifles understand what a wicked, awful thing is being asked of them.

JB Pritzker and Gavin Newsom are doing something new and important: They understand Stephen Miller's theory of fascist power politics, and they've developed a theory on how to combat it. More Dems need to reckon with Miller's understanding of the moment.

Inside Stephen Miller’s Secret Plan to Normalize Trump’s Dictator Rule
He wants to supercharge searing civil tensions to get low-information voters to embrace their inner authoritarian. Exactly two Democrats appear to fully grasp this.
