Personally, I’d rather let private developers spend their own money and target public funds where they’ll be most effective.

Public housing can absolutely help, and I’m in favor of it when it’s a political reality. But that’s the thing - to build out public housing, you need to overcome the same barriers that are currently slowing down private building (NIMBYism), and THEN spend hundreds of millions of public money.

Right, but if you do rent control you can’t count on the private sector building the housing for you. So any rent control policy that isn’t paired with an enormous public housing investment is going to be counterproductive.

Dems will need to broadcast loud and often 1) how the shutdown is hurting people, and 2) how anti-constitutional it is for the administration to selectively fund the parts of government they like (defense, DHS) while letting the rest rot on the vine.
November 1, 2025 at 11:22 PM
This seems like the ideal outcome for hardcore small-government types (Ross Vought, etc). I expect them to spin up their propaganda machine with this take sooner rather than later.

This is a JB Pritzker post

Whether this gambit succeeds will depend largely on how effective dems are at broadcasting 1) the pain caused by the shutdown, and 2) how anti-constitutional all this is.
November 1, 2025 at 6:11 PM
Then they’ll spin up their propaganda machine to get people on-board with this ultra-conservative vision of government.

IMO the shutdown will turn into a means to an end for Ross Vought and co. They will try to continue paying for the parts of the federal government they want (defense, TSA, ICE, DHS) while letting the rest atrophy under the shutdown.
