Things to know about getting from one place to another outside of a car in America:
1. You have no right to do that.
2. If you do it anyway, your fellow citizens will remind you of (1) by helpfully threatening to kill you.

The US government is totally audience-captured by a tiny faction of internet fascists, and spends huge amounts of time trying to impress them, dedicating official communications channels to barely-concealed in-group references, and making horrific, murderous policy decisions to thrill this group

Letting this thread roll around in my head for the past hour I’ve come to agreement. There’s a petulance I’ve noticed in corporate executives throughout my career, in which any outcome other than their goals being achieved is not just something they work to avoid, but something illegitimate.
I'm being completely serious that you can draw a direct line between the introduction of instant replay to football and the widespread toleration of Donald Trump's bad-faith lawsuits and election overturning.

Sometimes a touchdown is a touchdown.

Western media & politicians constantly claim one "evidence" Muslims are extremists is due to "child soldiers."

CIA recruited DC shooter at ~15 to become a child soldier. We see the horrific result. Yet 0 talk of accountability for CIA who recruited and trained him. Every accusation is a confession.

LLM-speak is the Charles Ponzi outfit of today, disarmingly confident in our present cultural context in a way that evokes more trust than anyone can overcome. In a generation it’ll be a signifier of fraud.

An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

And I don't know if the answer is: everyone is too traumatized to do work and we need to reinvent society. Or if it's more like: generations are losing their cognitive abilities and willpower due to destructive technologies. Or: we all have post-viral brain damage. Or: all of the above.

There’s no gif of the full sequence on bsky’s set of approved gifs, but in The Lion King when Simba’s advisor bonks him on the head and Simba says “What was that for??” and the response is “Doesn’t matter, it’s in the past” - that’s what I think of every time I hear one of these “look forward”s.
Let me put this more productively: there was considerable public fury toward previous Republicans for lies, crimes, misbegotten wars, etc. But it ran up against the *enormous, extremely powerful* forces defending elite impunity. And the latter forces won, decisively. It was barely a fight.

The US federal government is openly warring against its own nonwhite population in a way no one alive has ever experienced. It’s not even getting to hide it. The overt bigotry is comparable to Jim Crow. And our pathetic, cowed, putrid political class just keeps pretending it isn’t even happening.

The Kirby Argument everyone needs to be making.
Everyone in politics, everyone in media knows what’s happening here: the White House is controlled by a repellant white supremacist who waits with bated breath for any opportunity to run nonwhite people out of America. They know who it is, what he’s doing. But they won’t SAY it.
Trump: “I will permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries … denaturalize migrants who undermine domestic tranquility, and deport any Foreign National who is a public charge, security risk, or non-compatible with Western Civilization.“

Adding to the long list of tech company statement and actions that sound like satire, instagram has a seventeen-strikes-and-you’re-out policy for sex trafficking.
Instagram’s former head of safety and well-being Vaishnavi Jayakumar testified the company had a “17x” strike policy for accounts that engaged in the trafficking of humans for sex.

“You could incur 16 violations and upon the 17th violation, your account would be suspended"

There’s a phenomenon where the harshest animosity emerges toward those the aggressor is *almost* aligned with, or very culturally/ethnically similar or whatever, instead of those most different. I think about this every time leftists talk about electoral politics.

Inside me there are two Progressives.
Mayor Michelle Wu said she has no interest in confabbing with President Trump as New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani did last week while in Washington:

“I’m not interested in a bromance with the federal regime,” Wu said.
Mamdani can have his ‘bromance’ with Trump, but Mayor Wu says she’s ‘not interested’ - The Boston Globe
Last Friday’s meetup between President Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani raised eyebrows on both sides of the political aisle.

There’s a really widespread belief that affordable housing come from being built of affordable bricks or something. People really don’t want to believe that affordability is a decision individual sellers/landlords make entirely based on what people are willing to pay.
