There’s a really widespread belief that affordable housing come from being built of affordable bricks or something. People really don’t want to believe that affordability is a decision individual sellers/landlords make entirely based on what people are willing to pay.

The most salient political divide to me is people attached to the American dream of their own micro-empire built on a narrative of solitary personal achievement vs people who believe in building a well-functioning society of broadly shared prosperity.

Mr. REED of Pennsylvania. It applies only to the arrest of aliens in the act of entering the country. There has been some doubt about the authority of those men to make arrests. We want to make it very clear that they have no right to make arrest except on sight of a violation of the immigration law as to illegal entry. They have no right to go into an interior city and pick up aliens in the street and arrest them, but it is just at the border where they are patroling that we want them to have this authority.

After 12 hours together over two days, I've mostly given up taking notes while we ride to the AFL-CIO event in Brewer; I've too much material already. We start talking about science fiction again and Platner takes it upon himself to preach the gospel of Andor to the young comms guy who's been babysitting me, the only person in the car who isn't already a believer. Platner calls it one of the best television shows ever, alongside Battlestar Galactica and The Wire. I had an argument with a friend: He insisted that Jews were only really safe in Israel among fellow Jews. I pointed out the absurdity of this since Jews were quite evidently not particularly safe in Israel. Then he shifted: "Well, at least if you died there, you'd die amongst your brothers." This is what I mean about nationalism being a doctrine of despair: ultimately, when you pull back the layers, nationalism is about desiring death, death for others and death for yourself. A warm, comfortable death for you, and a violent, cold, and terrible death for the other guy. It choses being subsumed in a mass to avoid the terrible difficulty of remaining human that rises to the fore in tragic moments like this one. When I die, I hope it will be here in New York, the promised land, surrounded by my brothers: all the different peoples of the world.
