In other news I seem to have inadvertently taught my child to ask their Religious Studies teacher how things relate to the outcomes of the council of Nicaea if they don’t know an answer or want to stall for time. So that’s fun.

Wisdom, moral imagination, an enlarged sympathy for those who live or have lived differently from yourself. This is what you get from studying the Humanities. So quite important, actually.

I once did a continental European viva: large panel of examiners, room full of candidate’s colleagues, family & friends. 2 hours in, a panel member on Teams (unwittingly) nearly reduced me to hysterics: camera pointing at his ear; he rose & sank in his seat throughout his report, seemingly unaware.
I was just in a Teams meeting with a colleague who'd just got a new standing desk and kept accidentally hitting the controls to change its height, and when she did she'd slowly vanish from the screen like she was in a lift and it really made my day 🤣🤣🤣

Yes and take a flask of hot honey and lemon with you. I find drinking something warm/hot in pauses as you speak really helps (not cold water).

Terrific article by Richard Ovenden: energetic advocacy for the goods of public libraries (& a challenge to tech giants’ claims to offer free access to unlimited information). I’ll always be grateful that my local library allowed me to explore widely in my reading as a child.
