Your Sunday afternoon read — a new post on my Substack. Widows’ garb gave me an important clue. I love it when my interest in costume collides with other research.

A tiny fragment of medieval glass so high up in a window at St Mary's church, Offwell, Devon, you could easily miss it.

Thomas Yogge, a merchant, paid for the tower of St Andrew’s church, Plymouth in 1460.

Historic England listing says it’s the largest parish church in Devon.

St Michael’s, Chagford, Devon. The octagonal font was carved from granite by local stonemason, John Aggett, and dedicated to Katherine Hayter-Hames who died less than a year old in 1856.

The carved oak cover was added in 1892.

The 13th or 14th century doorway at St Mary’s Church, Berry Pomeroy, Devon at the foot of the rendered tower.

The church was rebuilt in the 15th century possibly by Sir Richard de Pomeroy, with later further restorations.

I’ve not been out much lately so here’s a favourite from the archives. The Seymour monument at St Mary’s Church, Berry Pomeroy.

Below the men — Elizabeth Champernowne (Kat Ashley’s niece, Bess in my Dartington novels) and her children.

I don’t think anyone guessed that the doors in the photo I shared last week are at Hatfield Old Palace where a reproduction of Elizabeth 1’s stylish signature is on display.

I didn’t notice that almost hidden behind (and to the left in the 📷) the 15th century octagonal font at St Eustachius, Tavistock is a 14th century oak iron-bound chest. An excuse for another visit sometime.

It was dark when we got home on Monday evening, but I spotted this daffodil by the back door. I didn’t think it would show up like this on a photo. No filters, I just snapped with my phone!
