We just sued the Trump administration for deciding to trade federally protected wilderness to pave the way for a road through #Izembek National Wildlife Refuge in #Alaska.

The swap exchanged approximately 500 acres of ecologically irreplaceable wilderness lands.

So, looking into going on a Relocation Cruise.

In spring, cruise lines move many ships from the Caribbean to Vancouver for Alaska cruises.

They take passengers along the way.

The fare for San Diego to Vancouver costs less than 4 nights in a motel.

With good food, live entertainment.

Hmmm.

Here's a #bird we dipped on for Oregon this year--Pacific Golden Plover, though we did see the less-likely AmericanGP. The one pictured we saw on the tundra outside of Nome, Alaska in 2023. Several of these were seen in Oregon this year, just not by us.

Spare a thought in particular for the Food Bank of Alaska. In addition to their regular support needs, thousands of people from the west coast have been airlifted to Anchorage following last week’s typhoon, and most won’t be able to return home until Spring 2026—at the earliest.

The Trump EPA canceled a $20 million grant this spring to protect the Alaska Native village of Kipnuk from extreme flooding, calling it "wasteful DEI."

Kipnuk was just devastated by massive flooding.

This administration's unlawful gutting of climate programs can have devastating consequences.

would take wing, swirl in unison, & re-alight in another spot. When preparing for migration in spring & fall, these tiny “peeps” gather in flocks of 100,000s to fly to or from their breeding grounds on the tundra coasts of Alaska.🪶 They winter in the Southern US, on the coastlines of US, C America,

Context: Kipnuk, a Yup'ik village near Bering Sea in SW Alaska, was hit with a massive storm and flooding last August, too. Last spring, it won a $20M grant for erosion control.

The GOP's Bugly Bill killed the grant program, which allocated 2.8B to communities hardest hit by climate change.
FB reports of major flood damage in Kipnuk - homes and store floating, people swimming.
Very high water in Quinhagak as well.

We’re staying in Lucca, in the Tuscany region of Italy, using the town as a hub & taking day rides. Pisa is only 25K away, mostly via cycle paths, so we biked to see the tower today. Yesterday’s ride was up in the hills. Perfect weather, gorgeous countryside, incredible art/architecture.

AMGO#4. American Golden Plover (Pluvialis dominica) making a quick stopover in northwest PA. These amazing creatures annually migrate from their breeding grounds in Alaska/Canada to South America (Argentina/Uruguay/Paraguay). And then back again in the spring! Photographed from my kayak. #birds

NEW PAPER: Radar data from Alaska show birds shift to diurnal flights as nights shorten, but peak migration still clusters near solar midnight—highlighting strong stabilizing pressure on flight timing that overrides pressure to maintain nocturnality.

I also take exception to the Alaska content. Alaska is not hell, except in the fall mud season, late fall, winter, early spring, and the spring mud season.

New to my Alaska Wildflower Guide: Bog rosemary (Andromeda polifolia). Despite the name and the look of the leaves, it's actually quite toxic.

Fun fact! I'm making a Pokemon fangame based on Alaska and people there tend to go to Hawaii for spring break. As such, I am having a tourist who was in Alola and bit too much they could chew and offer the player to pick one of the Alolan starters around the half way point of the game

This weekend I joined my colleague Margo Bellamy at the Association of Alaska School Boards Spring Academy. I appreciated the deep-dive on Alaska’s Tribal Consultation process, and used the opportunity to create action items aimed at integrating aspects of the process within district operations.
