there are two senders of emails that I just absolutely cannot shake:
1. a listserv from my hometown university that I subscribed to in high school and which has a broken unsubscription mechanism. this one may be incompetence.
2. the New York Review of Architecture, nyra.nyc. this one must be malice.

I don't think it's all that mockable that plenty of people don't realize lays are made from potatoes. after all, you can't buy root beer made with its namesake root in the US anymore 🤷

you can get this charming little Chinese e-reader (xteink.com), throw the good open-source firmware on there, and then put on it a large portion of the world's greatest literature (gutenberg.org), all costing like sixty bucks and less than a smartphone's worth of space. the future!

solid stuff. "poverty in the DRC isn't due to the wealthy. it's due to colonialism. which is, um, basically like a kind of nasty weather that hits the tropics, like a hurricane."
to add to this: poverty in DRC is due to weak institutions, disease, wars, corruption, and colonial rule. Some billionaires like Dan Gertler have exploited this for personal gain, which we condemn. We support the Norwegian model of taxes on resource extraction to benefit the people.
