💔One for sorrow...
Davey Dodds - who wrote The Magpie folksong featured in #Detectorists - became a good friend after I plucked up the courage to ask if I could quote his lyrics in my book. I drew him this magpie as thanks. He was a great musician, a true gentleman and will be deeply missed.

@dimension20.bsky.social In the penultimate episode of Gladlands, did you deliberately use a German folksong about a bird wedding as background score?

This piano piece was written in December 1989 in response to the murder of Romanian protesters by their government's secret police.

Seemed sadly appropriate to post it now.

Its middle section is based on a Transylvanian folksong. A translation is in the YouTube description.

I attended Portland Folksong Society Zoom Song Circle last night. I heard so many inspiring words and songs. While I listened and waited for my turn to share, I drew a picture of our neighbourhood cat.

Drawing is calming and I am always surprised by the result.

Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. They'd be able to do something cool with the opening credits: the faded title, the disappearing towers and statues, the theme a folksong once heard in Avalle...
JADE CITY by Fonda Lee (we almost got it and I still believe🙏)
Quote tweet with a Canadian book that would absolutely kill as a TV series.

Never underestimate the power of Folk music, centuries of songs and tunes record our shared history and new ones will continue to do so. #Folk #FolkSong #Protest
From the Chartists to the suffragettes, and from the civil rights movement to the anti-apartheid struggle, every great protest movement has found strength in song.

There is extraordinary power in music. More than one injustice has fallen before a hail of ballads.
I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.
