There's more to life than productivity. Buying into that Calvinist scarcity mindset is what keeps you happy with scraps.

Starting out less evil, more hobbit, but if you enjoy it enough we can call it sinful. Evil in the sense it made a 16th Century Calvinist very mad.

Finally managed to track down Maggie Nelson's book Jane: A murder. I think about the poem below a lot. If you can handle the heavy topic, I higly recommend checking it out (libraries will hopefully have more copies than shops!)

The calvinist new yorker
We say that we “decide” to get married, to have children, to live in particular cities or embark on particular careers, and in a sense this is true. But how do we actually make those choices? Read more: newyorkermag.visitlink.me/H7PMp2

I think you'll find it's in Wisconsin. That one definitely is real — I've been there.

Good lord! A Calvinist games machine.

My brain momentarily yelled at me to get some work done but then I remembered that it's New Year's Eve and I'm not a goddamn Calvinist

Hmmm. This is the quandary of Christian (esp the Calvinist tradition). If you’re saved, then there’s basically a guarantee of grace. And if you’re not, oh well.

I had thought he was in the "feared he was not in the Elect" category, which feels like the dominant kind of Calvinist. "confident you're not in the Elect" seems much harder.

i was briefly a calvinist for about a month right around when i decided to kill myself and stopped as a result of deciding that i do have to also listen to the passages about G-d being able to forgive and being merciful, i think about this sometimes

man i love calvinists. calvinist friend straight-up told me 'when i burn in hell i will burn with grace and be happy to get exactly what i deserve'

Or else, if you prefer the more strictly Calvinist perspective you can argue that if a higher magistrate (ie the federal government) still commands loyalty of the common people, then lesser magistrates are still obligated to resist the higher magistrate within the bounds of their station.

I did. I knew I needed that.

Cuz cyberpunk Calvinist aesthetic is just...Calvinism.

Good to know you are a Calvinist 😁 as everyone should be.

Calvin is not "too foreign" for the Dutch, as the Calvinist branch of Protestantism is the dominant Faith. That is the more likely reason for the swap.

For the Calvinist evangelical the escape route is that they personally must be they were a pre-chosen (elect) who can do what they want. It's a religious "I am good, you are bad" justification for greed and selfish cruelty to others.

Haha yeah! It is a fascinating topic and definitely gets under the skin, Jeff. A case of a grey area with Hollands Propaganda… I love a lot of it unreservedly, as it kicks back at the Calvinist propriety - and all those 50s-60s singers are tops in my books.

I've met a lot of Calvinist bitches, so witches would be a nice change.

Calvinist witches = frugal, workaholic witches
I'm begging for Calvinists to add an ounce of witchcraft to their politics.

I could see Calvinist witches being a thing, after a fashion.

For my theology mega-nerds: we have to remember that Barth’s actualism *is not* a general metaphysics of creaturely causation. Barth is not a Calvinist Malebranche, however much his detractors claim he is. What Barth’s work seeks to do is to state the following clearly:

It’s legitimately less karma and more predestination in the Calvinist mould. It’s the same root idea as prosperity gospel: health and wealth are next to godliness, while lack of success implies wickedness or moral inferiority.

This is behind a bunch of weird American hangups and thought errors.

We find a bigass sign in the middle of town that tells you where all the churches are at. We see SEVERAL Calvinist churches. THREE different Snake Churches. ONE Catholic church.

NO synagogue. NO masjid. NOT EVEN A UNIVERSAL UNITARIAN. This is when I start catching The Wiggins. I caught the Get Out.

Een beetje calvinist is niet spiritueel😅

[Hm. Inclined to be Calvinist in his potations.]
But have you prepared yet to make a New Year's toast with fancy🥂, just like Albrecht Ammon did in 1544 with a very thin white beer glass?
