2025 was certainly a year.

Will likely be the last full year that I'm able to keep the channel going.

With health issues, finances, IRL projects I've put off, some of the fun being dampened by shitty corps, genAI, & interest in the channel trending down I may be stopping at some point in 2026.

Apologies, but this just crouched in my brain and wouldn't leave so I had to get it out.

The sound of his worn shoe scraping the smoldering remains into glass pebbles and asphalt drowned out her soft question. "Sorry, what?" he mumbled. "You're still set on this?" No tears. She had run the well dry over the sun-bleached remains of her brother's final torn missing poster. The part of her that could possibly cry any more was in a medically-induced coma. To stop her from doing something she didn’t—couldn't dare to name. He shrugged. "Not like anybody else is gonna do it. Sure as shit ain't gonna be the cops." This made her frown, but she knew how right he was. Their attention just slid right past this small corner of real estate, no matter how many times the two had begged and pleaded for them to just have the building searched, or even just check into the space beyond that door for a few minutes. Not currently a priority in our investigation. She kept her eyes on him as he approached the low, heavy door cut into the alley wall. The whole area smelled like cigarettes and piss, like it had soaked into the soil of this place–all except a few feet around the door, she knew. That span smelled like nothing. She almost stopped him when he put his hand out and rested it on the corroded aluminum knob. But then she thought of her brother's face in the moments just before the kid had entered the blackness beyond, the almost bittersweet look in his eyes as he had glanced back at them both. Like he knew something they didn’t, had learned it as soon as he peered through the frame. A screenshot from a word processor. Text reads: She didn’t call out when he turned the knob and door swung open slowly, silently. Didn’t lift her arm. Her finger twitched, then laid still. Somebody’s gotta do it, he had said. He might still be in there. Somebody has to be the one to look inside. When her friend stood in front of the doorway, looking into the inky void beyond in the exact same way her brother had three months ago, she felt something deep inside her whimper and turn its back on everything. All she could do was murmur out one more question. “What… what’s in there?” He didn’t respond for maybe ten seconds. When he unhurriedly turned and looked over his shoulder, she saw him in whole for the first time in weeks. His fingers, normally tapping a staccato rhythm on his leg or any nearby surface or even just the air itself, laid still. The splits on his bottom lip where he had worn away the skin with his nervous chewing slowly yawned open as his mouth widened in a rueful smile. When his words came, they sounded like static. She couldn’t hear anything over the look in his eyes. He slipped into the dark and the door gently swung shut again, leaving her to slowly lower herself to sit on the cold hard-pack gravel and lower her head between her knees. Nearly five minutes passed before she looked up again. The stars were bright that night. So much brighter than she ever remembered. So much brighter than the space beyond that door, just twenty feet away. She stood up and brushed off her pants. She breathed deep. She gazed into forever.
