ICE has completely broken our social contract.

They manipulate social trust and are creating lasting damage to our most basic social foundations
CCTV footage appears to show DHS agents posing as people having car trouble in order to lure a target out of his house before arresting them. The target comes out and starts helping them before 3 vehicles surround the scene. The car "experiencing" trouble then drives off with them.

-A living wage
-Guaranteed healthcare
-The right to join a union
-The right to vote
-The right to choose when, how, and with whom you start a family
-The right for you and your family to live free from gun violence

These are the foundations of real freedom.

Historian here 💯 what Minnesotans have done is show the way in protecting our modern interracial democracy, a legacy of Reconstruction when its foundations were laid.
My theory of the moment: The extraordinary courage of ordinary people in places like Minneapolis is reawakening us to our social and economic ties to immigrants. It's making "love thy neighbor" cool again. That's the ultimate antidote to MAGA hate.

Thoughts on this:

The real story of the piece is mentioned in the seventh paragraph and then not returned to: one by one, the foundations that used to fund humanities research stopped, leaving just Mellon, which put an ideological rider on their funding in 2020.

They did not seize the humanities; everyone else left.

Another thing to keep in mind when people look at this is that a lot of the "charitable" giving the ultra wealthy do isn't to the sorts of organizations that ordinary folks think of as charity. It's going to foundations with sketchy track records, buildings that will bear the donor's name, etc.

Pro tip for any charitable foundations: This is not true. You are welcome to compete with Mellon in funding humanities

University of Texas Austin announced it was closing its American Studies Department just as Harper attacked one of the few foundations left willing to fund American studies research
In the middle of a once-in-a-generation attack on academia and the humanities by the right in the US, as people are losing funding and jobs, and we don't even know if our disciplines will make it out alive, Tyler Austin Harper decides that it was time to attack the Mellon Foundation.
hey cool man while you were deep in research or whatever you might want to catch up on some other stuff that has happened in the world in the past year

Online leftists miss the point when they treat trans, women’s, BIPOC, and disabled struggles as secondary to the “workers’ revolution.” Dismantling racial supremacy and patriarchy is the revolution. If you overthrow capitalism without uprooting those foundations, it just comes back with a new names.

This Presidents day, we simultaneously celebrate the great people who led this country in the past and mourn the fact that a single racist, sexist authoritarian has been able to inflict such lasting damage to the foundations of our democracy in just a single year.

I've done some foundations for characters behaviours and I couldn't stop myself from taking a break to play a *finally* alive game 😍⛪

For now it's just some basic idle behaviours - but more are coming!

Raise the taxes on billionaires.
Make corps pay tax.
No foundations to escape taxation.

Then… make the unemployment payment higher than the minimum wage that’s been set. Watch the billionaires squirm.
Idea:
Run a fully progressive candidate, no competition, have them talk about what they’ll actually do for the public. Have the party fall in line and promise to vote for the candidates progressive policies.
Then do that.

I know I know, I just don’t understand the reality, or some shit

My first piece for @techpolicypress.bsky.social - a primer of sorts on Ireland’s role in EU tech regulation

Context for the year ahead, as the 2 foundations of the economy - the 2 forces that dragged post independence Ireland out of poverty - the EU & US FDI - go to war
Tech Policy Press fellow Liz Carolan unpacks how Ireland’s media regulator, Coimisiún na Meán, became the EU’s chief enforcer of the Digital Services Act, now facing lawsuits from tech companies and mounting political pressure from Washington.
Why Ireland is at the Center of the Transatlantic Battle Over Digital Regulation
Coimisiún na Meán is at the center of a transatlantic clash over EU tech rules, facing US political pressure and lawsuits as it enforces the DSA.

Has anyone checked the foundations of Parliament House?

Everyone that sits in there seems to be sliding to the right.

I think this news broke just as he published his attack on one of the few foundations left willing to fund American studies research
Devastated to learn that Univ of Texas at Austin is closing the American Studies dept. The years I spent there earning my PhD were formative, making me the teacher, thinker, and writer I am today. I've passed on what I learned at UT to thousands of students over the past 20 years. Just awful.

So fucking funny to say the Mellon Foundation has a monopoly on humanities funding. They're the only one funding them! No one is keeping any other massive foundations or billionaires from giving money to the fucking arts, they just don't want to! They think the arts are bad!
