lol. Have you no decency, sir?
The acting head of ICE couldn't believe that I would question his agency's use of masked, unidentified agents to sweep up student immigrants during *police week*. Have I no sense of patriotism????

I think this is an example, too, of your point that the emperor doesn't need you to *believe* he's wearing clothes. He only needs you to *behave* as if you believe. "Just say yes."

“Why don’t you just say, ‘Yes, he does,’” Mr. Trump finally said to Mr. Moran, “and, you know, go on to something else.”

once again feeling the need to stress that a society interested in maintaining its basic functions needs to impose costs for baldfaced lying

Smart tech would not have been an acceptable trade for the freedom of NOT having smart tech!
My teenage niece and nephew were pitying me because we didn’t have smart phones growing up and I was like, kids, let me tell you about a glorious reality in which you could lie to your parents about where you were and, if you were smart, they’d have no way of knowing.

less ‘has become’, more like ‘showing true colours’
Gavin Newsom calls Kilmer Abrego Garcia a “distraction” @washingtonpost.com

What an absolute disgrace he has become.

Beyond repulsive and shameful.

Ma used to tell anyone she spoke to that “we live in a fascist country” & i want to kick myself for every time i tried to tone police her into a “more reasonable” position 😿
Americans are hilariously bad at identifying fascism until it's too late because the whole society is constantly marinating in it, and correctly IDing it would mean tagging some of their "common sense" assumptions

delayed “some” of this. Still would have been aiding & abetting genocide.

ICE knocked on the wrong door.
No crime. No reason.
He was handcuffed. Detained.
He’s 8 years old.

This should shatter you.
It should enrage you.
No matter your politics, NO ONE should be okay with this.

that one bright moment during covid when more than 6 ppl were pointing out that “getting back to normal” was a provenly bad goal to have, as ‘normal’ was NOT a place many saw as healthy or helpful towards living decent lives.
Our first priority is not thinking about the historical and material conditions that got us here. It’s getting back to the status quo that led us to this place

The USA should not/cannot be redeemed. Born of wanton cruelty & violence, it should pass mired in the same.
Look at how these people—these very image-conscious people—want the world to see them.

The USA should not/cannot be redeemed
This is going to get worse, not better. Never underestimate the American public’s thirst for performative cruelty towards The Other: defendants, foreigners, anyone they’ve been conditioned to see as less than human. We’re the country that made lynchings into picnics.

Yeah almost like the u.s. constitutional order was a working agreement hacked out by a powerful military figure and oligarchs who hated each other but hated the possibility of popular upheaval reducing their wealth and power even more.
alright here's a Take: checks and balances (and federalism) were supposed to protect against tyranny. But instead they just prevented a "tyranny of the majority" from doing universal health care and gun control, and it turns out they do basically nothing to stop an autocrat

This is

1.) irredeemably monstrous and reason enough for Chuck to not only be booted from politics but also this entire star system, and
2.) notably the exact same argument *every* génocidaire in human history has used to excuse their actions, up to and including Adolf Hitler.
The Senate Democratic leader says it can’t be genocide if you were “provoked.”

That is just a stunning thing to believe let alone say on the record.

I'm definitely going to take some time to think about how I edit for situations like this in the future -- it is weird to bend news writing towards uncertainty about longstanding legal precedent just because this scotus is jank af.

law is always whatever the ppl with the most firepower backing them up say it is 🤷🏽‍♀️
the ftc thing was a really weird one for me, I def had a moment because it's not a typical thing where what's in dispute are the facts -- the executive is disputing whether humphrey's executor is still valid law, which it is until scotus says it isn't, but also, what is law these days
I understand why people feel this way, truly. But it’s news writing 101 to avoid language that prejudges legal outcomes, even when they may seem obvious. It’s the same reason you’ll see stories about an “alleged” shooter or a “suspect” even if three people saw them do it.
