I think my kid assumption came from the way therapy was treated on TV in that era; a wicked nonsense thing that no one would ever admit to because it was so illogical that anyone would ever believe in "the advice of a shrink" I was deadass picturing a witchdoctor with potions casting rat spells
When I was a kid, I didn't know that "I've got to see a shrink" was 90s slang for going to therapy and thought it was something occult
I just assumed all these characters on TV whenever they got stressed were going to some kind of paranormal entity to solve their problems with magic in an alleyway

This, combined with "vice signaling" (taking pride in antisocial behavior) has given us the reign of the Stupid Asshole, something most people are against, but can only be remedied if we're not too polite to talk about it
An essential development over the past decade-plus is that the ignorant went from feeling chastened when their ignorance was revealed to banding together and deciding that, actually, they were right. They might disagree at times, but they agreed that ignorance itself was an indicator of trust.
