“Short bursts indicate an ICE sighting. Long whistles indicate agents making arrests. If you hear the whistle and you’re undocumented, said [Whitney Hu, a community activist and organizer with South Brooklyn Mutual Aid], ‘you hide. And if you’re somebody who’s not, you go to the street.’”
As ICE Street Raids Ramp Up, New Yorkers Stock Up On Whistles
Taking a cue from Chicago, community groups have distributed thousands of whistles in recent weeks — a grassroots system people in other cities have adopted to help neighbors sound the alarm.

"World's first potential trillionaire has killed 600,000 people, including 400,000 children" is the only headline that anyone should ever read about Elon Musk
One analytical model shows that, as of November 5th, the dismantling of U.S.A.I.D. has already caused the deaths of 600,000 people, two-thirds of them children. https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/jUzNSc

My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

Since people are talking about the razor thin margins in the restaurant industry, I would like to remind everyone of my bête noir, which is parking minimums for bars and restaurants. Off street parking mandates for places that serve alcohol are basically a subsidy to drunk driving.

This is a wonky process but BIG news regarding the Republican budget bill: My staff successfully got multiple provisions removed from the bill. Two key wins: 1) Medicaid provider tax. Striking this means Republicans have to backtrack on hundreds of billions in Medicaid cuts.
Seventh set of Byrd droppings is out, and WOW!

We won on trans care in Medicaid, provider taxes, FMAP, immigrants in Medicaid, and other issues.

These victories are amazing for the people they help - and cost Rs more than $250 billion of their savings by rough calculations, largely not curable.

Literally nothing Obama or Biden did on this had any impact at all. Because it is not actually about numbers or capacity or jobs or whatever. It is just pure id, purity, xenophobia and completely imperious to logic.

In 1862, a Union soldier found cigars wrapped in a piece of paper in a field of clover. The paper was a copy of Confederate Gen. Lee's invasion orders. The Southern sloppiness helped the Union stop Lee at Antietam.
It's unknown who lost the orders in the field, or if he was related to Pete Hegseth.

I'm really taking to the Niri window manager lately.

I spent several years on i3 and later sway. A 6-month-ish stint with XMonad in between. Then a couple years going back to ole-reliable Plasma.

Maybe Niri is just scratching an itch but it seems to do everything just right
