This was ultimately my biggest problem with substack: their notion that the answer to Nazi ideas is to amplify them so you can defeat them with better ideas presupposes that Nazi ideas have not yet been defeated on the merits, and that Nazis will ever recognize such a defeat.

The notion that fascists can be “defeated in the marketplace of ideas,” completely overlooks the fact that fascists don’t so much have ideas as they have murderous and usually genocidal intentions; for fascists ideas are just tools to achieve those intentions.
I’m not sure the problem here is bad faith. The fascists were quite honest about being fascists. The problem is overrating the value of winning a debate with people who are much more interested in normalizing their ideas than persuading.

How Liberalism Sabotages Itself
Our intentional blindness to bad faith is a loophole fascists use to gain respectability and power.

Blue checks are coming to Bluesky!

It's an interesting hybrid model that combines centralized verification (Bluesky says you're legit) with decentralized verification (an outside org says you're legit).

A big lesson I hope folks can learn quickly is the difference between reclaiming an oppressive phase and accepting an oppressor’s ideology.

“We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it” reclaims a slur by trading shame for pride.

“Lock him up” accepts a fascistic frame of cruelty and expands it.

Please ignore tired pieces in publications like the Atlantic that are still trying to stigmatize mask wearing.

Wearing a mask to prevent sickness from airborne viruses is a science-informed position, and it has been that way for over 100 years.

We’ve been taught our whole lives that violence is an individual person causing you direct physical harm.

And that’s why Trump/Musk use bureaucratic violence. They are hoping we’ll think it’s just a shuffling of papers and fail to notice that they’re literally killing people with their decisions.

If you're curious how a democracy transitions from a free press to state-run media, this is the kind of step you'd expect to see.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announces that the White House Correspondents' Association will no longer choose the pool reporter.

"Moving forward, the White House press pool will be determined by the White House press team."

Yeah which means any coverage moving forward from any outlet who continue to participate should be understood as pre-vetted and state approved. They don’t have to check every story now they’ve established the dynamic.
The message is clear. Given that the White House has already kicked one news organization out of the pool because of coverage it does not like, it is making certain everyone else knows that the rest of us can be barred too if the president does not like our questions or stories.
Having served as a Moscow correspondent in the early days of Putin's reign, this reminds me of how the Kremlin took over its own press pool and made sure that only compliant journalists were given access.

As always, the “stranger danger” panic enables abusive men.

There are a whole lot of sexual assaults that happen in cars, facilitated by the illusion than an Uber or a first date’s passenger seat is “safer” than public transit.
I cannot emphasize enough that the New York City subway is not scary. It’s one of my favorite parts of living here. I grew up in the suburbs having to drive on highways everywhere and that’s way scarier
