Issue Five of my speculative fiction magazine has launched, digital photographics, an eXtreme(ly) amateur cover (see below!) 2 novelettes, 3 short stories, and 4 pieces of longer serialized fiction! Link in the bio, click it for a life altering experience (no returns accepted (its free!))
the main thing about Crumb is he is a huge fucking loser, and the second thing is most people who think he is some super insightful, visionary artist are also, most likely huge fucking losers, including, but not limited to, most of the staff at fantagraphics
Bob Crumb coming out of retirement just to say "RFK Jr. is right about vaccines and my ex-wife should've taken more advice from me" is such a fitting end to Boomer Americana and everything the "alt-comix" movement claimed to stand for

The subcategorization/tropefication of popular fiction has been very bad in general, both for authors and readers.
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

Tropes, in particular, are fundamentally flattening framing of art that forces unique, individual expressions, into a mass culture, even if they barely fit. The end result is a more marketable, less memorable, 'product'.

Tropes, and the language around it, was a precursor of AI slop, same instincts

Biden gave ICE it's biggest payday ever, spent his entire term with dementia, funded and armed a genocide, and failed to implement most if not all of the progressive policies that won him the presidency.

Why do you think things would be fundamentally different if the Dems won?
Will someone please ask the 89 million Americans who didn't vote in the last election if they are being affected by anything this administration is doing to the other Americans?

Because obviously campaigning for Liz Cheney was such a winning move it won the Democrats the White House!
i cannot imagine being so addicted to failure that you will not allow your enemies to deliver an unconditional surrender
The more important thing is that Mamdani is not the type of politician that Liz Cheney would want to campaign for. It was bad that Harris campaigned with her, it is even worse that she was someone Liz Cheney wanted to campaign for

turns out that people who gleefully funded and armed a genocide don't give a shit about collaborating with fascists, who could have seen this coming
Raskin: We are a big tent. We must be a huge, vast tent. I say this is a party that’s got room for Marjorie Taylor Greene if she wants to come over.

downloadable generic personality that is implanted into able, disposable bodies, a personality that degrades over time until eventually, under the weight of its internal contradictions, seeks death

fun scifi AND metaphor for what Bond represents
James Bond’s death in No Time to Die is causing a nightmare for the next film. Writers are stuck because Bond “was blown to pieces.”

Anthony Horowitz, author of three 007 novels, says:

“You can't have him wake up in shower and saying it was all a dream."

Boris Artzybasheff, a Ukrainian illustrator who immigrated to the US in 1919, was known for florid, grotesque explorations of surrealistic anthropomorphism, combining human and machine into fearsome, laboring hulks of metal & flesh.

These illustrations are from “Machinalia.”

trying to make art, get better at it, whilst also trying to build an audience for it is like trying to live with a cancerous tumour

Food insecurity is ALWAYS a political choice. Famine is ALWAYS manmade. People go hungry because of other people’s decisions. We have more than enough food for everyone, and enormous amounts of it are wasted—literally thrown in the garbage—on purpose.

It was so obvious where these myopic politics of framing social positions are unimportant was going to go in 2016, but the amount of rightist masquerading as leftist it has produced is pretty astounding.

Rebecca Nagel, Matt Taibbi, Glen Greenwald, the Red Scare girls, Ben Burgers, etc
Establishment Democrats spent a full year complaining the Left forced them to be “woke.”

But then a left populist, Graham Platner, threatened to win in Maine, so they went right back to trying to cancel someone over old internet posts.

Is this based on anything or just a gut feeling Shakespeare would totally agree that his carefully written (and acted) art was just a bit he did because that's how you (not Shakespeare for certain) treat your own art?

'Purity tests' as an idea have essentially become a thought-terminating cliche that can be deployed to justify any behaviour imagined

It's a part of a parcel of beliefs that believe that nothing anything anyone does should have actual consequences attached
You cannot defeat authoritarianism with purity tests. If you are actively working to splinter a unified front against authoritarianism, you are the problem.

I think people catastrophizing broadly minor annoyances and pretending they threaten the very social fabric of society is one the main through-lines of reactionary thought, and you probably shouldn't do that.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?
