One way I have found to mourn someone is to set up a monthly sustaining donation to a mutual aid effort they cared about. If you can join me in honoring Alice Wong, @sfdirewolf.bsky.social with a sustaining donation today, please do. Thank you Alice, and I will not let the bastards grind me down.

i'm a bad taiwanese american and i'm learning simplified chinese but i very specifically hate the word for "car/carriage" now because how did we land on the simplified character 车 (childlike, lanky) when we had the perfectly good traditional character 車 (elegant, dignified, a pleasure to write)

It is a fact universally known that despite how many times the police brass look people and elected officials in the eyes and say "face recognition just gives us leads"--what really happens is police go arrest the name spit out by a computer without a single question or follow up.
Why publish one story about A.I. gone wrong when you can publish two?

Here's my other story today on how the NYPD used facial recognition tech to arrest the wrong man for public lewdness.

The perp was 5'6''. Cops charged Trevis Williams, who is 6'2''.

Multiple legal scholars I spoke with also independently highlighted something interesting to them -- the exclusion in this law of “religious counseling or peer support”, which is directly distinguished from "therapy". 6/

Q3: Is there a loophole & potential for harm here, where as long as "therapy" & similar isn't said by name, the same "services" might be provided?
A: No. The law defines what the services are, and does not hinge on what they're referred to as.
There are def grey areas in the definitions, though. 5/

really don't care if you disagree with me, i think constantly filming everything everywhere is bad, i think the widespread deployment of facial recognition is bad, i think the fact there are cameras everywhere inside of arenas & that increasingly you have to use your face to buy a hot dog is bad
