On this, the last day of Michael D. Higgins' presidency, I think it's important to acknowledge that a 5'3 man deciding to be followed everywhere by two enormous Bernese Mountain dogs was a great bit.

If they truly believe this then they ought to have no problem ending insurance for Congressional members and replace it with HSAs so our tax dollars "don't go to insurance companies" or even better FSAs and at the end of the year they give the remainder back to taxpayers

What an amazing essay from the former chair of Africana Studies at Bowdoin. I'll share a few sections in the reply but seriously, read the whole thing. It's all insightful and beautifully written.

Master and Commander but Star Wars. HMS Surprise is New Republic, Acheron is First Order, setting is Outer Rim. Or if you do the book, make Aubrey early Imperial still clinging to codes of honor from the Old Republic and the Americans are the Rebellion
what star wars really need is a HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER style submarine thriller

I think what is happening here is that Jackson is doing the 48hr pausing so the First Circuit (hopefully) declines to place a stay pending appeal (which would be a longer stay) and then the Court will be in the tougher position of delaying SNAP for a longer stay period.
#BREAKING: Justice Jackson has issued an "administrative" stay, temporarily pausing a district court order that would've required the USDA to continue using contingency funds to pay SNAP benefits.
The stay expires 48 hours after the First Circuit rules on USDA's request for a stay pending appeal.

there is virtually no debt funding in AI and no one is really overweight on debt other than OpenAI, which will become a division of Microsoft more or less by mechanical operation of its idiotic deal with them if it is insolvent.
my hot AI take is that regardless of how we feel about it, bailing out the big AI companies may be *necessary* to avoid long-term systemic harm to real people

I spit on the reputation of the U.S. Supreme Court, not that it can get much more degraded than it has already become by the repulsive actions of its disgusting GOP members.
