watching screeners for the second season of a show so weird, and whose mawkishness should completely sink it, yet it's also oddly one of the most compelling and moving things on TV

still high on this one
A Poet: went to see this film basically on a lark, having half paid attention to a trailer i thought looked amusing in a Napoleon Dynamite kinda way.

turns out it’s a fucking incredible movie. starts as the funniest film of the year and morphs into one of the most moving.

was just watching the Weapons trailer again to remind myself how good that trailer was, and it just made me wanna watch Weapons again, which proves the case

doing commercials used to be a shameful thing that you had to go to Japan to do
matthew mcconaughey, bradley cooper, and parker posey should be in movies, not doing uber eats commercials. pathetic

Fincher hasn’t been held to a high enough standard

i have finally seen K-Pop Demon Hunters, which was perfectly fine, though unsettling as propaganda for a pretty ugly industry and insidious consumerism, but god damn how did Sony execs watch that movie and decide to sell it off?? all-time Hollywood ball fumble.

TIFF playing ads for Botox before movies is… 😙👌🏻

asked Siri to play the next podcast in my queue, but it played Alanis Morissette’s Hand in My Pocket instead, which was also the correct choice

yep, and while pressure from lower classes sorta spurred the robber barons’ sense of civic duty, the reality is their idea of elitism was copying a fantasy of European aristocracy

the new age robber barons successfully convinced the world that it’s okay for CEOs to wear hoodies at business meetings
The Gilded Age 2.0 robber barons, unlike their Industrial Revolution predecessors, do not have the same motivations to fund libraries, the arts, and other cultural institutions. Certainly they don't give a good goddamn about taste. David Rubenstein is like a billionaire woolly mammoth in that regard

Ed Harris saying he wants to play the former husband of Gladys from Weapons instantly made me reconsider my opposition to Cregger doing a prequel

really need to get back to eating right, except that would require shopping for groceries, which for me would mean walking outside for more than 10 minutes, and it’s basically hell frozen over out there

the film adaptation is also aces
If you’re into books written by people instead of assembled by AI slop, I just finished this one, which is about a Black guy who quits the CIA to train Black freedom fighters in Chicago, and I can’t stop thinking about it.

no idea how i missed this, but it’s great

I've been thinking about Julia Loktev's MY UNDESIRABLE FRIENDS since yesterday. One of the powers of long cinema in a theatre (324 minutes here) is that it can completely saturate your thinking/imagining space. And it's a shared experience, shared with the temporary community in the theatre.

there’s only one real flaw with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: it should’ve had a fun theme song

this is NOT a pairing i ever would have predicted

though, as Safdie suggested, Marty Supreme and Mr. Bean have some things in common

MY UNDESIRABLE FRIENDS PART 1, d. Julia Loktev @juliaofelbow . Urgent, superb, vitally alive filmmaking. Portraits of brave, brilliantly analytical Russian independent journalists, all women, whose oppositional journalism in authoritarian Russia turns into real time emergency professionalism ... 1/
