This bit of @pkrugman.bsky.social's interview with G. Elliott Morris made me think of the Ezra Klein/Ta-Nehisi Coates dialogue
Morris: That’s a good characterization. On that point, and maybe this opens a can of worms or a Pandora’s box even, but there is a tendency in Washington to view voters as responding to policy preferences expressed by their legislators sort of above everything else. This is called “spatial analysis” in political science. That voters imagine politicians on some sort of two dimensional grid of conservatism and anti-system thinking, or social conservatism or whatever. They pick the politician that’s closest to their ideal point on this graph. And they’re doing all these calculations and making the most rational decision about who to vote for. And that just doesn’t seem true. Maybe you and I do that. I mean, certainly I don’t do that in local elections, there’s too much information for me to gather and process. And most people don’t engage in that sort of thinking about politics. Maybe to get back to the popularism thing, it just sort of yields the theory of this type of politics invalid. There’s certainly a lot less leverage to this than I think the funders in Washington believe.

It’s a lot of people doing a lot of things all at once. THC: Right. EK: But I think of the huge backlash to Bernie Sanders for going on Joe Rogan’s show because Rogan was transphobic. Such a big backlash that when I defended him — I became a Twitter trending topic. And to Elizabeth Warren for going on Bill Maher’s show — Bill Maher is Islamophobic. There were protests at Netflix when they brought on Dave Chappelle.

In any case, most actual fighting will be done by small robots, and as you go forth today remember your duty is clear: to build and maintain those robots.

At the height of the Scopes Trial controversy, and amid the efforts of the Bryan Bible League of California to make the King James Bible a required textbook in schools, Millikan –‘to a great many people in Southern California (Babbitts and quacks included) the greatest man in the world’– intervened to reconcile God and Science. Millikan went on the stump as a ‘Christian scientist’ proclaiming, via radio , a national lecture tour and a book, that there was ‘no contradiction between real science and real religion’. The closest this great scientist ever came to a definite stand was a full gallop on a supernatural race-track running from Fundamentalism to theism, but his powers of occult observation would have done credit to any crystal -gazer in Los Angeles. . . . The whole thing was a conglomeration of metaphysical aphorisms and theological sophistry, suffused in a weird and ghostly atmosphere of obscurantism, with occasional and literal references to Santa Claus.
