My parents were free-wheeling Boomers convinced things were only ever going to get better, financially. They had good reason, then. They could afford a house, car, and weekly nights out on two full time assistant manager jobs at a fast food chain. But they also got caught up in emulating wealth trap

When the Senate was debating the 14th Amendment’s citizenship clause, Senator Cowan of PA objected, worrying that it would grant citizenship to children of Chinese immigrants and of the Roma.

Senator Conness of California responded that of course it would!

Do Trump backers ask themselves why he moved a convicted child sex trafficker to a nicer prison where she gets custom meals and a comfort dog? What’s their theory for why he’s doing that, other than to get her to cover up his role in the Epstein scandal? Do they think it’s OK to rape children?

Here's my promised thread of threads on every episode of "Death by Lightning." Again, it's totally legit to diverge from history to craft this satisfying (and manageable) show. I'm simply providing the real historical context, as best I can. Plus a final thought at the end.

Just watched ep. 1 of “Death by Lightning.” For a screen adaptation, great job. Superb casting.

The problem: Everyone’s white. Black delegates played a big role in GOP conventions. There were still Black congressmen! Hollywood is bad with Black people in history with power & their own interests.

Megyn Kelly claimed Epstein was into “the barely legal type,” referring to 15 year-olds.

So I wrote about how her comments highlight the ways both purity culture and rape culture sexualize young girls and make male desire their responsibility.

The Barely Legal Type: Purity Culture, Rape Culture, and America’s Lose-Lose Proposition for Girls
The very parts of American culture that claim to promote teen abstinence and sexual purity operate on a parallel logic to the rape culture that enables the darkest misogynistic violence against women.

I *think* the attempt to speedrun authoritarianism has failed. The new acute danger is greater political violence (Trump calling for hangings, etc). But the concerted danger is down the line, when MAGA realizes the bill for all this corruption will come due. www.offmessage.net/p/maga-disar...

I have a friend who, in the wake of Clinton/Lewinsky, used to talk about how the world was going to hell and predict that because of declining moral standards, soon pedo stuff would be legal.

The monkey’s paw curled. Bet he never thought he’d be voting for the “grass on the field, play ball” party
Holy shit. They're really doing it. They're doing "actually pedophilia is good now." The debasement of the American Right is complete.

A lot of education discourse is at root an inability to decide whether the purpose of our education system is to 1) teach material and measure learning 2) reward students who work hard 3) separate the smart kids (destined for smart guy jobs) from the dumb kids (destined to serve the smart guys)

bad satire might as well be a.i. slop these days

it's not helping
With a “WOW!,” President Trump posts a claim about DOGE and “royalties linked to Obamacare” that originated on a satirical website. That site’s own About section reads: “Everything on this website is fiction… If you believe that it is real, you should have your head examined.”
