With Connecticut poised to modernize its parking policies, this from @sightline.org is so important. Parking flexibility isn’t just for cities, it’s great for small towns!!!

Word
Here’s something that’s really important for everyone to understand.

If we design our cities just for cars, they fail everyone, including drivers.

If we design our cities with many great CHOICES in how to get around, they work better for everyone, including drivers.

Spread the word.

Overbuilt parking wastes money and space that communities can put to use for better things than empty asphalt! More homes, save trees, more local business investment.
A new study out of Denver shows that removing mandatory parking minimums can lead to more affordable housing being built.

By eliminating costly parking mandates, we can focus on creating homes that better meet community needs.

Baltimore just eliminated parking minimums, reduced lot line setbacks, and allowed single-stair buildings for buildings up to six stories

All without years of studies or prevarication. This is not just the path to rest belt revival, it is a model for cities nationwide

Same in Spokane. With a supermajority on council and a willing mayor, we have to run as fast as possible on issues like safe streets, transit, and urban infill.
In NJ, in VA, in NYC, it's time to get to work.

There are no permanent majorities. There are only moments of time when parties can assemble a majority of voters around a set of ideas. You have to take that moment and run as fast as you can, before the next election breaks your stride.

Illinois will becoming the 5th state to eliminate local parking requirements for new development projects near transit, after:
—California (assembly bill 2097, 2022)
—Colorado (house bill 24–1304, 2024)
—Oregon (Land Conservation and Development Commission, 2022)
—Washington (house bill 1491, 2025)
Illinois will effectively eliminate parking minimum requirements in ~all of Chicago and much of its suburbs thanks to the transit funding bill that passed last night.
Also contains parking reform! This is a preliminary map of Chicagoland based on the People Over Parking Act provision.

It would also apply downstate though!

Minneapolis built more housing than any other major Midwest city & it’s not a mystery why.

They allowed modest density housing types city-wide, cut regressive parking mandates, and made it easier to build apartments near transit.

The results: more homes + slowed rent growth.

but what caught my eye was the stair.
