I'm committed to posting on BlueSky because I do think it's important for progressive intellectuals to see photos of my dog.
Hey so I was doing chores and threw a movie on to play in the background.

I chose the John Candy doc, "I like Me."

Ended up sitting down and crying for over an hour.

What I'm getting from this is that after deportations we will no longer have the expertise to build or maintain technology such as digitally-controlled cars or tsunami warning networks.
They want to wipe out almost a third of the country. It’s got nothing to do with illegal immigration.

It’s white nationalism pure and simple. They’re fascists, and there’s no reason to doubt it.

the correct way to end the year, especially this year, is the ritual burning of xmas trees in the street in south philly. every time one finished burning, the crowd gleefully chanted, “ONE MORE TREE! ONE MORE TREE!” until, as if summoned, someone else came , parting the crowd & dragging another tree

This is very disconcerting.
Ocean heating defies all earlier projections. We are on the worst possible track. Yet this has completely vanished as a topic of conversation in America.

Out of curiosity, I just ran a few paragraphs from The Butchering Art through an AI checker and it got flagged: 88% AI. This book was released in 2017, and AI machines were subsequently trained off it. How many writers are getting flagged for AI because of the literal theft of their work(s)? Insane.
OMG - f*ck AI for ruining the em-dash for writers. I use them all the time. Of course, what a shock that AI uses them since they were trained off my voice and other authors' voices.
I'm a writer who has specifically been directed *not* to use em-dashes because "they mean it was written by AI." I can detect AI writing, but it is not simply a matter of the punctuation used.

They knew. Replacing buttons with touch screens was actually cheaper and consumers thought it looked high-tech. The auto industry is collectively sociopathic.

Super low hanging safety fruit. US regulators have had a decade plus to get manufacturers to make safe door handles and still they haven’t.

A significant amount of safety research has existed for decades on Human Machine Interfaces proving exactly this. It's exhausting to watch money and effort wasted in a tech hype cycle to constantly undo and redo what we already know in safety engineering.
Amazingly, reaction times using screens while driving are worse than being drunk or high—no wonder 90 percent of drivers hate using touchscreens in cars. Finally the auto industry is coming to its senses.

The bottom half of America? It holds just 6%.

This is perfect. The DOJ's embarrassing snafu with disappearing redactions was the fault of Elon Musk. Musk cancelled government subscriptions to Adobe programs that would have made the redactions permanent. What a pack of fools.

Transit boosters often dislike discussing cost containment, fearing they’ll give ammo to enemies.

But agencies need to address endlessly rising expenses. It’s inexcusable that new buses cost ~2x in the US what they do abroad (largely bc of excess customization).
Why US Cities Pay Too Much for Transit Buses
A new paper argues that lack of competition, demand for custom features and “Buy America” rules have driven up costs for transit agencies in the US.

I think people today don't understand just how dramatically the night sky has changed - it looked like it does in super remote areas *everywhere* before the invention of electric lighting, and light pollution that obscures the sky has gotten dramatically worse in the last 25 years.
If you ever have the experience of seeing a night sky out in the deep countryside you can understand this; it really is a fundamentally different experience, and I can't imagine it not being formative to people.
