New Yorker, union activist, employment lawyer, dad, generational trauma ender. He/him.
I've never read anything quite like this book; I highly recommend it. It's a non- fiction account of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin, but written as if it were a Tom Clancy- type novel. It has all of the historical characters doing all of the things they did in real life, but inserts dialogue.

This dissent is perhaps the single most insane rambling I have ever seen released by a Federal judge. It's full of conspiracy theories about George Soros and personal insults to the majority's writer (a Trump appointee). This footnote appears on page SEVENTY EIGHT of the 104 page dissent:

Halligan's incompetence is so overwhelming that the practical legal answers of how to unravel the situation devolve to esoteric questions of philosophy.
So arguably the judge can’t dismiss the case because there is, technically, no case!

In retrospect, hilarious that Jim Comey put together the 1927 Yankees of legal teams and then they saw that they were actually playing in the Little League World Series
So an invalidly appointed prosecutor brough an unvoted indictment, based on evidence violating the 4th amendment, attorney client privilege, and the 5th amendment. Against "false claims" that were literally true, all on direct order of a vindictive president?

Is this the most dismissable case ever?
NEWS: During a hearing in federal court in VA, prosecutors confirmed that the operative indictment in the case against James Comey was never shown to or voted on by the entire grand jury before it was presented in open court.

Defense counsel argued that’s a complete bar to further prosecution

Oh my GOD. Holy shit. Holy shit holy shit holy shit.

To non-lawyers: this level of incompetence is BREATHTAKING. It is absolutely incomprehensible. This is a "mistake" that will be taught in criminal procedure classes for GENERATIONS.

Look at this list of the ten largest public companies in the world by market cap and try to tell me that we're not in an absolutely unsustainable AI bubble. I see, essentially, Saudi Aramco and 9 AI companies.

Um. Hm. Seems like there's a word for this.
After Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected Trump’s offer to start U.S. strikes against cartels on Mexican soil...

men arrived in a boat at a beach in northeast Mexico and installed signs that say the U.S. Department of Defense is restricting access to the land

Reports @cbsnews.com
Warning signs appear on Mexican beach declaring area restricted by U.S. as Mexico rejects Trump offer to strike cartels
The signs read in English and Spanish, "Warning: Restricted Area," and had been declared restricted by "the commander."

As a Jew, I've always worried that "Never Again" would mean "Never Again TO US," but it's wild to see someone just come right out and say that.
Sharing the video of this because it’s such a ghoulish thing to say that I’m honestly in disbelief that I even heard her properly

I swear to God these people are insane. Just out of their absolute minds.

You honestly don't even need to go back that far. I'm 5'11"; no man in my mother's family born before me was ever taller than 5'6". My wife is 5'7"; no man in her mom's family was ever taller than 5'6". My grandfather was born in 1916 and fought in WWII and was mayyyyybe 5'5".

A friend was asking me for podcast app recommendations, and I was like "Pocket Casts is great and it's only like a $5 purchase" and that's when I found new users can no longer buy it but only rent it.

Hate to be a pedant, but 10 U.S.C. § 2350a(a)(1) vests the authority to designate a country a Major Non-Nato Ally with the Secretary of Defense, and we no longer have one of those since Hegseth styles himself the Secretary of War, so this is ineffectual.
APNewsAlert: WASHINGTON (AP) — Trump designates Saudi Arabia as a major non-NATO ally as US administration aims to elevate military relationship.

I blame the U.S.' and the world's rise of the far right on the fact that the last time everybody agreed on something it was that "fascism is bad," and all the people who lived through fascism as adults have died off in the last decade. Even the most racist American in 1946 hated Nazis.
The 1930s and 1940s featured no shortage of outrageously prejudiced (yes, even by the standards of their day) politicians, academics and media figures who were nevertheless shocked and disgusted by the sheer scale and intensity of Nazi barbarism when it reached full speed (pun not intended.)
One of the real big difficulties here is that social media has embraced "Republicans were always like this" and "Republicans are all like this" and are thus struggling within the assumption that 40-45% of politically engaged Americans are Nazis.

He's confusing rent controlled apartments with rent stabilized apartments. About half of all apartments in NYC are rent-stabilized. There are virtually no rent-controlled apartments in NYC, and by definition it's almost impossible for an immigrant to live in them.
Had to log into Twitter for a quick sec today for work and this got dropped in my feed and whew.

Firstly, I've got no idea wherever this stat came from
Secondly, 37% of the city is foreign born
Thirdly, there's like 20k rent controlled units out of 3m apartments
Fourthly, I'm tired

The lead singer of one hit wonder early 2000's rock band Lostprophets pled guilty in 2013 to raping babies (yes, actual babies) and right before his sentencing was recorded telling a fan from jail that he thought it was funny. He got a 29 year prison sentence and was murdered in prison last month.

Inflation rose sharply in 2021-2022; by the summer of 2023 was back down to ~3% which is totally within norms for the last few decades, and is currently about 0.5% higher than it was a year ago at this time. I wish people would stop lying.
Meuser: "We have some great things happening in our economy. This whole inflation debate -- when Reagan came in, he took 2, 3 years to start bringing down inflation with high interest rates. The president has corrected inflation just in 4, 5, 6, 8 months."

So there's this weird Long Island thing (also done upstate in Oneonta) where pizza places take a pie fresh out of the oven, throw about a half pound of cold shredded mozzarella on it, and serve it that way. The idea is that the cold cheese keeps you from burning the roof of your mouth. It's gross.

At the end of the day, Trump wants complete impunity to be able to murder journalists who say bad things about him, and so of course he's not going to call out MBS for murdering Khashoggi. He's jealous.
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

Just to get out ahead of the scandal: yes, I do turn 45 next month. Yes, my wife is only 41. I know that this is a problematic age gap, but she was 31 when we met - older than Nuzzi was when she started her affair with RFK Jr. - and fully capable of making her own bad decisions.
November 18, 2025 at 2:23 PM
I wouldn't find the whole Nuzzi thing so funny if she weren't in the middle of a press tour about her book, dropping excerpts that were clearly written by a pretentious tween.
Very amusing to see the different ways that people, particularly people who are writers, are being catty about Nuzzi, who to be clear, deserves it.

I am a lawyer, and... Jesus Christ. This is unfathomable. My expectations for an insurance lawyer becoming a US Attorney were low, but not *this* low.
I’m not a lawyer but I’m pretty sure you’re not allowed to tell the jury to “vote assuming we actually have a whole bunch more secret evidence”
