Discworld QOTD, from Jingo

“People live for ages side by side, nodding at one another amicably on their way to work every day, and then some trivial thing would happen and someone would be having a garden fork removed from their ear.”
Discworld QOTD, from The Last Continent

“The wizards were civilized men of considerable education and culture. When faced with being inadvertently marooned on a desert island they understood immediately that the first thing to do was place the blame.”

It has never been about immigration. it's racism, and it's intimidation. and profit for some. Allowing it to happen to any group means it's a possibility for everyone, and that's how fascism maintains power while being horrible.

I mean this with sincere concern. Not sure how else to say it: too many of the men taking up for Tom Brady sound like they want to *be with* him, not like they have empathy for his situation.

This is misinformation. The current problem with the New World Screwworm began in 2023, when the supply of sterile flies used to keep them out of Panama was interrupted. DOGE did not have time machines.

I’ve started and deleted this rant many times tonight, but: Investor Owned Utilities should not be allowed to exist.

Especially ones that have killed customers repeatedly, and only maintain infrastructure because they’ve lost lawsuits.

The existence of IOU’s is another failing of society.

In actual fact, the way this is supposed to work is that the party unites behind the person who *wins the primary.* Until then, you've got to work for your seat. Sorry!
The articles framing is sorta funny because this clearly isn’t a centrist vs progressive thing as much as it’s a fight vs don’t fight thing

“It turns out that banishing the slur from public discourse was, in fact, important. Because now it’s back and it turns out that it does matter when subtext becomes actual text, when terrible people enable open hatred and bigotry, encouraging others to emulate them, degrading us all.”
Perry: The return of the r-word
"These days, the r-word slur has become a staple of the American right wing, uttered with few professional or social consequences," David M. Perry writes.

Weiss, today: "The only newsroom I'm interested in running is one in which we are able to have contentious disagreements about the thorniest editorial matters with respect."

CECOT reporter, y'day: "Ori and I asked for a call to discuss her decision. She did not afford us that courtesy/opportunity."
Bari Weiss this morning on the 60 Minutes segment: "We need to be able to get the principals on the record and on camera."

Of course, most journalists know that oftentimes people who are the subject of negative reporting don't want to speak on camera or on the record.

Something I wish we were currently better at grasping is that sometimes bad characters will do bad things. Not every villain has to be a rapist who eats baked babies, but they will be racists, bigots, assholes, and violent bastards you want to see lose. That doesn't mean I, the author, agree.

Remember that in the winter of 2020-2021, we *made a whole strain of influenza extinct* by staying home more and wearing masks when we went out.
A lot of people are sick right now.

Flu and Covid are raging, but the good news is a well fitted respirator can prevent both!

A good mask like an N95 is very effective at stopping flu and Covid.

My article looks at how to choose one, how to fit test, where to buy & more.

Mask up & save lives!
We’re Witnessing the Fall of Public Health… and Your Best Tool is a Mask
Measles in Texas, bird flu in Louisiana, tuberculosis in Kansas and Covid everywhere. Public health has been dying a slow death for years, we can’t count on it anymore. What can we count on? A mask!

They developed the "high school girl's sports" angle as a wedge issue, to lever their way up to full society-wide discrimination. What's endlessly stunning to me is how many purported liberals a) helped them when it started & b) are still helping them even after the larger purpose has become clear!

I think Ian’s right about this

If you want to know why the calls at the pro level suck today, think back to youth sports and how That One Kid’s Parents made the games unbearable for everyone

And now remember that those are the refs who grew up and got pro jobs
Tinfoil hat time: I think this is true. I received an email from the league where I coach.

There is a ref shortage. It is because *parents*, not players, are disrespectful.

Pro refs have pipelines similar to pro sports. I think we're killing the pipeline to good officials & it started >20 yrs ago.
every fan in every sport seems to believe the league they watch most closely has uniquely bad referees who are worse than they were at some unspecified point in the past
