The “Sold A Story” podcast does a really good job of covering this. It’s an epidemic

Yup. Watching little kids I know just GUESSING what was on the page after telling me they "learned how to read" is some shit.
This is asinine!

They're teaching kids to triangulate the possible meaning of the word based on whatever else is on the page, instead of teaching them how to sound it out and learn the definition????

Fucking ass!

Is this good? It doesn't seem good.

the entirety of the british press talked themselves into believing this woman is trans based almost entirely on JK Rowling's judgement of the athlete's appearance.
Nothing illustrates the arseholery of the IOC and the British Press more than the use of the image of a not-Trans woman to illustrate a story about trans women being banned (because there are no current trans women competing at this level)

Portland Public Schools are teaching phonics now because in 2023 the state passed a bill that invested significantly in moving away from whole language and embracing phonics.

Oregon also passed a law last year that will require licensed teachers in 2026 to know evidence-based literacy approaches.

since this report came out in 2019, many, if not most, school systems have done a pretty hard about-face on the calkins method. but yeah, it was popular for well over a decade, so there's a whole bunch of people reacting based on their reading of the vibe of a post and not actual meaning!

Maybe you can elucidate something for me—and this is possibly my poor reading skills—but it says better readers simply recognize words better. How does one "recognize" a word "better" if they have not encountered that word yet. Isn't this just assuming good readers are already well-read?

Oh in some places it's worse.

I learned about it years ago from an article that reported in one class they observed the kid got full points for trying if they used the picture to guess but picked a word that was the wrong length in every way and no points for already knowing the word by letters.

Hooked On Phonics!!

Clap clap clapclapclap 👏 👏 👏

It blew my mind and pissed me off. I learned with it. HoP system changed too much before my kidsis but the phonics game finished the job and I notice her school was leaning away from it.
I am absolutely baffled that anyone thought you should teach kids to read without phonics.

This explain why there is so much social media confusion. Some people think they understand but they do not look at the words before them to get a precise meaning. It's all just vibes:

For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have repeatedly debunked. And many teachers and parents don't kno...

ever since I learned about three-cueing I've developed infinitely more patience for replies on social media. mfers literally do not know how to read. people are walking around conjuring random meanings into words they don't know, and they don't know a lot of words. it's crazy
