I conducted a seminar and workshop on AI-produced monstrosity, or Generative Monsters, to the Center for Digital Narrative at the University of Bergen, Norway yesterday. High point of my academic career for sure.

i wonder if anyone is going to ask the other question: why are kids confiding in AI how they feel about *insert mental health topic* and not confiding in a real person? or are we just going to use this as another “AI bad” thing and move on?

getting rid of AI won’t fix the problems that got us here

Black turtleneck and black pants and the barista tells me he likes the "whole Steve Jobs thing I've got going on." Okay first of all, I'm pretty sure he wore a mock neck and jeans. Secondly, THAT'S your point of reference for this outfit? Come on

was playing Scrabble with my family last night and thought about how a game where only the misspelling (but still phonetically accurate) of real words are accepted could be fun

I don't think we should give up books and reading but people really need to read Caroline Busta's article on this subject. Arguably we are moving away from logocentrism www.documentjournal.com/2024/05/tech...

TheRealReal stopped including shoulder measurements for shirts which more or less means I can never buy shirts from them again

Yes. Literally this. Exactly. So perfectly well put.
I think the fundamental problem with Will, and the Democrats broadly, is they have gone all in on this data-driven philosophy that is so obsessed with observing and understanding the current moment that it has lost the ability to perceive a future that isn't just the current moment extended forever.

This is why Shanzhai is such a good conceptual framework for understanding AI. In China, knockoff culture is rampant. However it got to the point that dupes started to improve on the original so much companies started copying them.

"Thinking space which expands rather than shortcuts cognition" is a great way to express the goal.
In that frame, education should be actively engaging with AI, but not in "write me my essay" mode or an "assistant" type posture. Instead as a thinking space which expands rather than shortcuts cognition when done right.

I read it years ago but I just got the Akira collector's edition box set and it is really remarkable just how much was cut from the original manga to make the movie

Not the most clever but I'll never forget it: working the Angelika Film Center box office. Parker Posey the person with her buy tickets. They only realize later after asking us that they read the board wrong and ordered AM tickets not PM. Posey, witheringly deadpan says, "you guys are smart"

I got a safety razor shave kit for Christmas and apparently I didn't do it right according to the Google search I did after I finished because I completely butcher my neck

12YO girl signed up to do “stand up comedy” at the talent show. 13YO boy decided to heckle her. Teacher started to tell the boy to leave her alone, but the 12YO comedian said “no, no, let him go, this is the closest he’s ever going to get to having a conversation with a girl.”

My sister apparently will not wear any clothing before she washes it first.

Is this a thing? Has anyone known someone who does this?

This is crazy to me. My mom got a new coat for Christmas and my sister refuses to let her wear it before she washes it first??

You can’t spend 40 years shouting "Information wants to be free!" and then get mad when a neural network takes you up on that offer.

I asked my sister for either science fiction or horror fiction for Christmas and I am genuinely impressed she got the exact book I wanted without more to the suggestion
