If women are underrepresented in STEM, it's at least partly because men like this offer mentoring, then embarrass themselves by assuming their mentees must be into them, then decide the best solution is to cut ties, which sends the signal to other faculty that the mentee must not be good enough.

We'll know the danger of AI-fueled inequality is over when people who don't personally like AI feel comfortable admitting that language models can be as beautiful and terrifying as a cathedral or a Piranesi sketch. Give it 50 years. Okay, maybe 200.
One way you know rejectionism is over: people like me, who use GenAI heavily, are also comfortable piling onto/initiating threads about how creepy or annoying it is. (Like phones, which we can all agree are awful.)

one of the fundamental sticking points is that this is actually technically impossible, and even where possible is not necesarily even coherent -- in a saturated model, the net effect of an individual record may be zero.
u could easily just ask for permission to use people's data and graciously remove them if they decline

I genuinely don’t think people realize that datacenters and what they accomplish (hyperscalers) are genuinely a far more efficient way to do the computation required for modern life. Limiting datacenters is not more efficient and does not consume less power for the same amount of compute.
