we have GOT to stop thinking about this in terms of hypocrisy because that's not what's going on! we NEED to understand why pedo apologia is so rampant in anti-trans pseudoscience, why abuse is so rampant in the home, why child marriage is still legal across the country etc.

"The Institute", Carol Emshwiller. She has such a deft touch with the absurd; like _Carmen Dog_'s Academy of Motherhood, this story's Old Ladies Institute of Higher Learning is the ridiculous ground for some serious, moving work.

Cliché to say but I want more of this
Grandmother had a lot to learn, but she made good progress. Her first semester she had three Bs and one C, but after that she always had a sprinkling of As. It was in her senior year that she discovered that her medium was really movies. She talked two other old ladies into posing for her films. Grandma had close-ups of their wonderful old skin, like around the eyes and under the arms, etc. (Grandma had learned by then to see everything though she only got a C in the freshman course, Finding New Things to See. Not such an easy course either.) And sometimes she had them pose together on a cot, but . . . well, that's how Grandmother landed in jail and never quite got to graduate. She died before she served out her time. But don't think she didn't know what she was doing.

The older I get, the more I appreciate my freshman high school history teacher who made his distaste for my senior "boyfriend" well known, and stared him down whenever he was in eyeshot. Teach did try to warn me.

Oh, I agree! I was privileged to publish Jessica Amanda Salmonson’s "Time-Slit Through a Rice Paper Window" in the Summer 1984 issue of Last Wave, and the final paragraph, which is not just about that story but all stories, gives me goosebumps still. A brilliant writer.
A few days later (we are time traveling again) Kohachi is home with his mother. There is much ado about the marriage preparations and the invitations which must be sent out. A servant is replacing the torn windows in the rice paper screens and doors, so everything will be spiffy for the celebration. We won’t be able to see through the time-slit much longer. What will happen to Kohachi after we are gone? Perhaps he has a good life with his bride, winning a few more duels in his life. Perhaps there is a war and he goes off to that and dies, or else is a success and becomes a wealthy warlord. Possibly the son of someone he killed comes and duels with him and wins. It is difficult to know what occurs in the life of the people in a story after the story ends. If we have any hearts at all, we must suffer thinking about it. That’s why stories sometimes say “happily ever after” or else kill all the characters off, so that we won’t have to worry about it. As for Kohachi, we have no idea what happens to him after this. We can always hope for the best.

Smarter ppl are commenting on the exact date etc but Peking Inst says it is 1 of only 2 paintings of Yuan hunt - other being Kublai's.
