EXCLUSIVE: One Saturday afternoon in October, my phone lit up with a notification.

I glanced down at the message.

“Anna, Lindsey Halligan here,” it began.

So began my text exchange with the woman who is prosecuting the president's perceived political enemies.

The question of whether the expert actually knows what they’re talking about, whether they’ve thought it through enough, of whether maybe the highest circles of our politics are filled with mediocrities who have bluffed their way to top, will never occur to them, because that is what they are too.

I don't mean this (entirely) disparagingly. I'm just shocked that so many people are unfamiliar with the grey tribe world.

Like if you're surprised that a "tech bro" would be hostile to NFTs as an obvious hype scam, you have a bad map of the different camps grouped as "tech bros."

A lone cybercriminal used Anthropic's vibe-coding LLM to automate a massive spree that hacked and extorted 17 companies. It did almost everything for him: Scoped out who to hack and how, organized the hacked material, helped him decide how much to ask each company for and wrote his extortion emails.
A hacker used AI to automate an 'unprecedented' cybercrime spree, Anthropic says
The company behind the Claude chatbot said it caught a hacker using its chatbot to identify, hack and extort at least 17 companies.

I recently became acquainted with "Osanaetoki Bankokubanashi" 童絵解万国噺, a Japanese illustrated history of America from 1861. The retelling of the revolutionary era is quite something. Here, for instance, is John Adams wielding a sword in mortal combat with a gigantic serpent.

Cool that these people came up with an ideology where the tenets are:

- Bitching on Twitter is praxis.

- You don't have to do anything.

- The problem will solve itself.

And then congratulate themselves and give each other pats on the back. Very nice of them to stay out of the way.

oh, yeah, okay, that’s the source for almost all of my disdain for these pieces at this point; everyone can describe the symptoms, they’re literally everywhere, but, like, now what?

Christ. Just came downstairs to find my dad watching an entirely AI-generated YouTube video about an event that didn't happen involving the Pope. Had to convince him the whole think was fake. "How can you tell?" he asked. He has five degrees including a PhD.

I've received 100+ replies like this, claiming game revenue goes directly to executives & shareholders. So I checked & made this chart.

This is what happens when you buy a $69.99 game from EA, the company with the WORST reputation in the industry.

0.8% goes to c-suite. 53% goes to devs & workers.

I think you're directionally correct, but would argue the dynamics are slightly more complex.

1. Shor-thought is big on "issue salience." Voters trust GOP more on immigration, so Dems should avoid talking about immigration. Hence why Trump/Vance kept pushing "eating the pets"; tactically stupid,

See also the claim people make that it’s “not profitable”. Ok so why are you complaining then, if it’s not profitable eventually it will stop being subsidized and the problem will fix itself? Clearly what you are actually worried about is that it *will* be profitable!

this is just head in the sand shit man, I'm sorry. like it is unambiguously useful for many things, which is why it's such a potential problem. we wouldn't be concerned about it's impact on teaching and learning if it couldn't spit out a decent approximation of undergrad writing.

It’s finally clicked for me that some people, even ones who are *nominally* critical of AI, are acting as if it’s even possible for AI to live up to the hype.

It’s like thinking John Edwards is a fake psychic, but that real psychics exist.

No, he’s a fake psychic because all psychics are fake.
if it always lied or didn't work, it would be way less dangerous. magic 8-balls aren't a social problem. something that produces something roughly truth shaped and accurate like 60-75% of the time and *identical looking* insane moon logic bullshit the other 40-25% is a potentially a huge one.
