In 3 days nearly the entire Bluesky team doubled, tripled, quadrupled down on the "WAFFLES" thing in response to upset users, and now Jesse Singal etc are using it as a slur against trans people
It would have been so easy to just *not* do this. There was no reason to escalate for days. :\

My personal timeline is full of autistic people trying to explain that there isn't more autism than before, it's just that we're better at detecting it, and there's nothing more autistic than hoping explaining something at length will help matters when nobody is really listening.

This population is already vulnerable and transgender people read the news just like everyone else. So for a news site catering to LGBTQ+ spreading misinformation does can actively increase harm, which goes against our core tenets as journalists.
