Yūtarō Kubo and Satomi Maiya’s The Girl From The Other Side (2022) is an unconditional little treasure of animation, like watching an Angel’s Egg sprout from the darkest corners of The World of Peter Rabbit’s sketch sprawl forests. Stunning drawings, gothic atmosphere, INCREDIBLY sweet and kind.

Trần Anh Hùng’s The Vertical Ray of the Sun (2000) is an absolute treat for the eyes and ears, lush humid greens and Hanoi soaked in crystal summer rain while Lou Reed fades in and out like a nap’s near dreaming, but I’m left dissatisfied and confused by the docile character work.

Zhang Yimou’s Curse of the Golden Flower (2006) is decadence exemplified, a cinematic cornucopia overwrought to a point of nausea. Doesn’t fully come together, but its murderous knot of incest and sedition is such a deliriously violent assault on the senses in these massive kaleidoscopic swathes.

The lavishness is almost inaccessible and garish, the scale of it all sickening as it is impressive. The melodrama is dark as hell, the cruelties and familial hatred frothing over into the murder of thousands and blood spewing and staining the vibrant volatilities of velvet, silk, crystal, and gold.
