RIP to truly one of the greatest actors of all time. The man excelled in every role he was cast in and there will never be another Tatsuya Nakadai.

EVIL DEAD TRAP is fucking NASTY. Extreme cinema transmutation of contemporary 80’s horror flairs - the sleaze of slasher schlock, the neon-splatter of Giallos, the existential cruelty of J-Horror - all of which are funneled via snuff video static and gruesome textures.

Whole thing is shot like a blasted-out nightmare, dripping with industrial sweat + grime, its absolute excess found in Savini ultraviolence and hazy Fulci nightmarescapes. The midnight world of CCTV is a labyrinth just waiting to swallow you whole.

It’s proud of its shlock and awe to the very last breath where it fully sheds the Argento/Hooper of it all; blossoming into Hennenlotter gristle and Shaw Brothers visceral breathlessness. Wasn’t surprised to see Takashi Ishii screenwriter credit at the end.

The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires (1974)
A one of a kind Hammer/Shaw Bros. co-production with Peter Cushing returning to play a Van Helsing. Not especially fantastic, but there is truly nothing quite like it. Dracula takes over the body of a local Chinese vampire and raises much hell.

You all, movie lovers and toku fans and those who wander, must watch Taylor Wong’s Buddha's Palm (1982). You have to, it’s very important that you watch Buddha’s Palm.

I hadn’t actually seen this one yet!! “Lesser” Amemiya simply by means of tooth-cutting experimentation and imagination. PHENOMENAL effects and production work in this one, turning jidaigeki and wuxia into arcade cyberpunk and mecha slice-n-dice. Sick as fuck, slick as hell!

The designs in this absolutely rock, especially our cybernetic protagonist. Just top of the class juice, start to finish.

Not to unearth decade-old Tumblr discourse, but I finally watched (one of the paired versions of) the 2011 National Theatre Frankenstein and Benedict Cumberbatch playing the Creature as a high support autistic child is one of the most pigheadedly offensive things I think I’ve ever seen.

A near dizzying triumph of stage directing and set design, a masterclass from Danny Boyle in translating his film language and ambience to live theater. Beyond insane what this show did visually and aurally, especially the music.
But fuck what an astonishingly disastrous handling of the Creature.

Even aside from Cumberbatch’s dehumanizing mimicry, pushing the textual insidiousness of the Creature’s gendered intents into being a flatout rapist is so horrifically shortsighted (and worsened indefinitely by that mimicry).
Stunning, beautiful wreckage. Fascinating, frustrating.
