For this #GivingTuesday I'm going to make the (biased) argument for why you might consider donating to @spritelyinst.bsky.social, especially if you care about a healthier future for the internet! spritely.institute/donate/

It's Giving Tuesday, where every nonprofit asks for your donations! I work for @spritelyinst.bsky.social where we develop software to re-decentralize the web and build healthy communities. Sounds cool, right? Let Christine explain why our work is so important:

Everyone who does computer things knows KOSA would be a disaster and yet they keep trying

Y'all, we can't let this happen

Congress is attempting to fast track KOSA and more than a dozen bills that would restrict internet access, censor speech and increase surveillance under the guise of protecting children.

Committee hearings begin tomorrow.
Lawmakers to consider 19 bills for childproofing the internet
KOSA is back, along with more than a dozen other bills that will erode free speech and privacy in the name of protecting kids.

A great validation of the notion that when people say they’re anti-woke, they just mean they’re hyper racist.
Elon Musk’s Grokipedia cites Stormfront — a neo-Nazi forum — dozens of times, study finds
An analysis by researchers at Cornell University is the first comprehensive look at Grokipedia since Musk launched his project last month.

Thread. “AI is patching up the holes in conspiracy theories and so making them seem more reasonable, making them easier to spread and more resilient to collapse” was not on my bingo card.

AI relieves the pressure of cognitive dissonance. That’s … not great.
Bellingcat’s contact email has always been a magnet for people with fairly unusual views; paranoid delusions, sprawling conspiracies, the works. But recently, the pattern has shifted, we’re seeing more and more emails clearly written with ChatGPT.
