The poetry of Mary Oliver.

What was I supposed to have done?
Doesn’t everything die, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it that you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?
2025 has been a rough year. What's one piece of art that's brought you absolute joy despite everything?

Dems should be screaming to the rafters about the problems caused by the shadow docket, and why use of it this extensively and to these ends justifies a "reformation"*of the Supreme Court

*total reconstruction
The conspiracy by this Court to replace our founding charter with dictatorship isn’t funny, but:

“Every time Trump makes a shadow docket appeal he might as well shout ‘By the power of Greyskull!’, because he’s about to transform from a feeble man who can’t grip a glass with one hand into HE-Man.”
The Supreme Court's use and abuse of the Shadow Docket is *how* Chief Justice John Roberts legitimizes Donald Trump's authoritarian takeover of the government.

Here's the average carbon intensity for the US over the past 12 months. There aren't too many clear correlations, but these stand out:
1. Missouri, what the heck is up with you?
2. Renewables in CA and TX aren't causing price increases.
3. TVA seems unbothered.

When I was in sixth grade in the early 90’s in Massachusetts, a 17 year old HS junior took a seventh grader (13 yo) to prom
there were multiple different countdown clocks until the Olsen twins turned 18

reddit had its infamous 'jailbait' community online until late 2011

all of this shit was just out in the open, it was awful
I feel like maybe it’s a function of everyone online being born in 2002 but I don’t think most people realize how openly and explicitly pedophilic american culture was until like… maybe 10 years ago

It seems to me that "the institution of slavery has left a nearly two hundred year cultural scar on the region in which it was most prevalent" and "there are still loads of good people living in the South who deserve to not be written off" are not actually in tension with each other.

Centrist Senate R's are scared of what they might be forced to vote on (laudatory), while Centrist Senate D's are also scared of what they might be forced to vote on (derogatory)
Not really. You just do it.

None of the previous carve outs were any different, or any "easier" to tailor that way. But here we are, still saddled with the filibuster.

lol this actually is a use case, every time your camera takes a photo it uploads a statement to a public blockchain that phone ID X took a picture with a hash of Y at timestamp Z, then if you want to use it as evidence you would show that your phone had ID X and the image matched the hash perfectly.

It’s only war crimes if there’s a declared war going on. Otherwise it’s just sparkling atrocities
This is not a rhetorical…is Stephen miller actually committing war crimes?

Those last two sentences? They apply to everything.
This is the biggest attack on free speech since the McCarthy era but it also has significantly less popular consensus behind it than the second Red Scare. It's being done on behalf of a minority faction led by the most unpopular president in modern history. Organizing against this can win.

Incredible achievement that the one price that the Trump administration has brought down notably is "cocaine."
The Trump-Miller administration's single-minded focus on migration is starting to impact the availability of drugs in the US, according to this detail from a very good investigation @wsj.com published today.

Which way, America?
We're either going to get a new constitutional moment akin to Reconstruction or the New Deal in the aftermath of Trump, or yeah we're just going to slide into mediocre competitive authoritarianism (or worse)

Back when I had facebook, I was witness to a political debate where one party brought a number of highly sourced data points to the discussion. The response from the other party was "Oh yeah? Here are some memes to illustrate why I'm right."
This state of affairs is ultimately rooted in very simple change to the means of production: the cost of publishing print and video media has fallen precipitously, meaning there’s suddenly a vast sea of media to choose from, meaning consumers in the market can self-select narratives they enjoy.
I’ve said it before and let me say it again:

The fundamental breakdown of contemporary politics, the feature that has given birth to our new authoritarianism, is how modern digital media has inculcated the expectation that everyone is entitled to live in whatever reality feels most validating.
