Just so we're all clear: the folks using direct democracy to push for Alberta separatism have a problem with....democracy.
Modry adds that the problem of democracy is that it's a "tyranny of the majority over the minority," citing COVID as an example. "If you protect individual rights, you will protect all of societal rights, but the reverse doesn't occur."

Unclear the U.S. pie will shrink significantly in 2026. I'd certainly take about equal, but too many dumb, context-free headlines have led too many people to think the #EV sales trend is ever-downwards. I don't believe it is. Here's why.

As Automakers Pull Back on EVs, What Can We Expect Next?
This past year was the great EV retrenchment, but don't believe the grim prognosis—electric vehicles are here to stay.

this is absolutely a violent political threat, but also, I hope people remember/pay attention to the normalization of this kind of talk--allowing it to slide unremarked leads to dangerous places in the US, India, etc.
Even if the complaints about Bryan Passiflume go nowhere, they are worth making.

The pervasive narrative that Canadians somehow mark a box on their ballots for "majority" or "minority" parliament makes me insane.
Canadians didnt reject a Liberal majority--that's not how this works.

They did clearly reject PP as NDP and others voted Liberal to prevent PP from being PM.
ROSIE: You've now lost two MPs to the Liberal Party... Is this a problem of your leadership?

POILIEVRE: No, it's a problem of Mark Carney's leadership that after Canadians clearly rejected a costly Liberal majority... he is trying to manipulate his way through backroom deals.

Every day, I get letters demanding that the federal govt or the GG or the LG “do something” to change or save Alberta. But the only people who can “fix” Alberta are Albertans. There is no magic constitutional genie. The responsibility is on all of us.
The UCP has made 2025 one of the darkest years for Alberta’s democracy.

Albertans can turn on the lights in 2026.

By simply being Albertan.

Let me explain. 🧵 open.substack.com/pub/drjaredw...

The government's page undersells the importance of this date, because today is the anniversary of the creation of the Crown of Canada as a separate and distinct entity from the UK crown.
That's why we gained control over our foreign affairs and "our own voice" on the world stage.
Happy Statute of Westminster Day to all who celebrate!!

Also, happy 'read more closely' day to those who fall for the trap that the image on the Government of Canada's page about the Statute of Westminster is of the PM signing the Statute of Westminster... :-P
