"In areas with intensive land use, negative impacts are clearly visible. For example, in small streams affected by forestry, more than 50 percent of common species have declined," Syke researcher Anna Suuronen tells Yle News.

What's happening to Finland's lakes and rivers? Urgent action needed to protect declining species, researchers say
More than half of underwater species have become rarer in some inland waters, say researchers at the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) – who lay out recommendations to reverse the trend.

Fatbikes are great for winter riding, by the way. No studs required from my experience.

I could check out some of the 200 kilometres of trails in my town and the Joensuu area this weekend, neat lean-tos there.

Imagine if the 'other transport' and buses, 2-3 wheelers segment would be as large as the car segment. We'd be moving a lot more people cleanly and efficiently.
Electrification could now reach 75% of all energy demand, as the road-transport and heating sectors rapidly electrify 🔥🚗

These two sectors account for 50% of global energy use and are now ready to switch from fossil molecules to clean electrons.

It's no joke that biking is easier in the winter if the maintenance of dedicated lanes is prioritized over the roads in the morning.

You have to heat the car, scrape the snow and ice and the visibility is still often poor. The best conditions to ride a bike are below -10°C when snow is compact.
Cars might work fine in California or Florida, but they’re not practical here in Canada. We have winter.

Perhaps a wee freeride and forest skiing trip to Pallas would be in order next March.

This is why the north of Finland will always* be superior to the South. Helsinki? Grey, dark, slush, supercooled rain. Oulu? Shining winter wonderland, and snow you can ski on.

* Admitted, "always" is unfortunately proving to have a short shelf life due to climate change.
Yeah, it is mostly just desperate humour!

TBH I don't mind the real cold that much; that is to a large extent a question of clothes. Although every year I do wonder why my ancestors had to move to a place where the very air hurts you.

It's the rain, sleet and the darkness that really bug me.
