"Including base salaries, the current cost of Ford’s cabinet now amounts to $5.7 million compared to $3.3 million when his party first rose to power in 2018. Adding parliamentary assistants to that total comes to $6.9 million 2018 and $10 million in 2024 - a cost increase of 45 per cent." (Global)

Wrote a newsletter about rebuilding a Walmart overnight, exhaustion, memories of home and the holidays, and why I think "Wonderful Christmastime" is good when heard in the right place.
We're here tonight, and that's enough
“Wonderful Christmastime” is not a perfect song. It might not work on your holiday playlist, or stand proud on a list of beloved classics, but it might be that it’s not a song to be played at home wit...

Doug Ford’s Conservatives are taking an extended break from Queen’s Park until March 23.

People are struggling, ERs are packed, basic needs aren’t being met – and this government’s response is to ram through a bunch of harmful bills and then clock out. It’s undemocratic. #onpoli

338,000 of traffic charges dropped in Ontario this year compared to 57,000 in 2019. Our court system is in shambles. Justice denied to seriously injured road users. Dangerous driving left undeterred and prolific. globalnews.ca/video/115724...

There has to be an investigation into this fund. The information we are getting raises serious issues.
"The Ford govt gave ~$2.5M from its Skills Development Fund to businesses owned by an entrepreneur that the Ontario Securities Commission penalized a few years ago for allegedly misleading investors with inaccurate press releases."

To recap: Doug Ford destroyed parkland at Ontario Place for a private waterpark; closed Ontario Science Centre under false pretenses; and now is moving the OSC into Harbourfront.

Partial destruction of one public place; permanent destruction of another; longterm takeover of a third.

Doug Ford’s government handed $2M from the Skills Development Fund to a company run by his family’s own dentist.

We should be investing in workers based on merit, not connections. This is exactly why trust in this fund has completely collapsed. #onpoli

$65B (billion) of healthcare funding in Ontario has gone missing.

Over five years, at least.

The Auditor General has no idea where it went, so it wasn't audited.

Oh, you didn't know?

Maybe I'm missing an important point, but the Ford gov's claim that "Landlords will lower rents if they can rent out more of their properties now that we've given them more power over tenants" feels like something you'd say if you'd never literally never heard of capitalism before in your life.

you do have to do it in a couple of places but this tutorial makes it easy to go uncheck the boxes that otherwise lets Google's AI read all your shit. or move everything over to protonmail but moving everything over is a giant thing I know.
Google has started automatically opting you in to let it read your stuff to train AI. You need to turn this off in SEVERAL places in your settings (not just for Gmail), if you want to maintain privacy and confidentiality.

Good news: you can stop Gmail from training its gen ai on your emails by following these👇 instructions.

Bad news: that will delete 'promo', 'social' and 'update tabs'.

In other news, I'm WAY happier having switched to proton mail. They're entirely welcome to that $8.20 a month!
If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.
