Fascinating
1. Admin may not have informed Congress but has been talking regime change w US oil industry
2. Oil at $60, US firms not excited about major capex to get VZ heavy sour crude
3. Sounds like WH wants to prod oil firms to make their vision happen, more than WH doing US oil's bidding
a lot of interesting revelations between the lines of this story www.politico.com/news/2026/01...

Trump is going to revive what had been largely collapsed Venezuelan support for the regime, isn't he.
VP Delcy Rodriguez, whom Trump indicated earlier today was collaborating with the US government, is live on television right now.

Earlier reports that she's in Russia are false. She's in Caracas with the rest of the cabinet.

In his 2019 memoir The Threat, former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe quotes first-term Trump saying Venezuela was “the country we should be going to war with, they have all that oil and they’re right on our back door.”

Trump's Venezuela Attack: It’s All About the Oil, Stupid!
Here are five times Donald Trump himself admitted that illegally attacking Venezuela and toppling Nicolás Maduro was aimed at seizing the country’s massive oil reserves.

I still love it, but it's hard to find. Murchie's Russian Caravan is a delicious blend that uses it.
The once popular tea is now fading into obsolescence in the West. But what has become of lapsang souchong in the country that created it? We went on a quest to find out

As someone who has been riding buses for almost half a century, this is very true. Especially the knowing that the bus is coming, and when. In high school I wrote a short story about freezing to death waiting for the bus at an Ottawa bus stop in a winter blizzard.
One thing I wrote about here is how technology has made buses *way* more convenient while techno-futurists were obsessed with flying taxis and self-driving cars.

Going to post "the aesthetics of knowledge without any actual tendency towards truth" in my syllabi statements on AI. And probably on my office door. 😏 What I wouldn't give to be able to write a phrase like that!
just so it's clear: this is the exact core function of genAI

Fascist government and climate deniers love it because it can produce the aesthetics of knowledge without any actual tendency towards truth. It is automated denialism.

Shame on every climate scientist promoting its use (there are lots)
Bob and I were among the hundreds of researchers that were supposed to conduct the 6th U.S. National Climate Assessment. Now it looks like they're gonna produce it with a few people and Grok? Communities need rigorous and accurate information about climate change. This will put communities at risk.

This appeared on the BBC News today, showing the increase in solar electric generation in the UK.

Not sure who produced it, but genuinely think this is a genius piece of scientific communication - the construct and choice of colour scale is near-perfect.

Chapeau!
