All the men in my family worked on lake boats/freighters. I was 12 in 1975, and the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald sent horror through my family. We talked about it around the dinner table for weeks after.
The song is a beautiful tribute, but it came later.

My experience is that midwesterners have more PTSD surrounding "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" (the song, not the event) than others. Maybe the event, too.

I was in #Germany when the Wall fell & have a small tangible reminder of a moment when history shifted before our eyes. It was an inspiring, electric time. I remember the uneasy aftermath — the local gangs roaming the streets of Dresden, a stark contrast to the optimism of reunification. #Berlin

The Margaret Atwood interview reminds me of the Anne Lamott quote in Bird by Bird:
