We can’t shame children for being on screens too much but also shame them or subordinate their needs every time they wander outdoors. That’s what I’m looking at
New Deal Alert! Congratulations to Angie Schmitt @schmangee.bsky.social, author of PLAYING IN THE STREETS, a nonfiction book about how infrastructure can be redesigned to better include children and families, sold to Catherine Tung at North Point Press!
Los Angeles is becoming a cautionary tale about what happens when cities just completely abdicate their responsibility for keeping people safe on the roads imo. Site where a pregnant mother was killed on a family bike ride

I just bought a subscription to the Washington post a few weeks ago because their transportation reporter Ian Duncan is doing all this amazing work like deep dives on road safety in Albuquerque 😭😭😭😭😭

Abolishing ICE*!

* (Internal combustion engines)
Netherlands and China are on the way to being the next Norway, where internal combustion engine auto sales are nearly dead.

BEVs were 65% of Dutch auto sales in December and 41% for 2025.

In China, internal combustion autos market share falls to ~40%.

True story. A friend of mine had an awesome union job at an EV battery plant in Youngstown (rust belt poster child city).

Guess what? They laid off the whole plant smdh.

Kind of awkward how we had a backlash against cancellation right before news came to light that a bunch of celebrities and business tycoons vacationed at pedophile island 🥴

Did your family eat at restaurants when you were young? It was pretty rare for us.

I was just reading my daughter Ramona Quimby Age 8. The climax is her eating at a restaurant with her family, a special occasion

Thinking about this re: the book I’m working on re: children & public space

My question is this. Where are the big important agencies like ODOT on important practical transportation questions for essential services like schools?

For this book I'm working on, trying to find the craziest car line story. I vaguely remember one about people waiting two three hours to pick up their kids.

Does anyone remember where?

Where I'm located e-bikes *insanely* outperform buses, and often beat driving (due to congestion, parking). E-bike easily beats bus by 2x on any given point-to-point trip. The reasons to forego e-bike are: lack of safe infrastructure, rider ability, bike maintenance, theft risk, more than 1 person.

One thing MLK Day reminds me is, right now we just lack good leadership. When are we gonna have someone really brave and admirable and principled and really good at organizing people we can look up to again?

There are now no new cars in the United States that retail for less than $20,000, as companies exclusively target wealthier consumers.

This Waymo claim “they are better than human drivers” Ipso facto, they shouldn’t be regulated, and only stupid luddites want to do so because they don’t care about people dying in the roads, is a PR talking point junkoyoshidaparis.substack.com/p/robotaxis-...
Robotaxis: ‘We’re Above the Law Because We’re Better than Human’
Waymo’s argument that its robotaxis drive more safely than people drive is wearing thin, as long as Waymo can’t seem to correct its obvious misbehavior -- unable to stop around school buses.

One thing that was (sorta) exciting in this report was transport emissions are FINALLY leveling off.

IDK how Trump's attack on EVs will affect that. Likely not good.

Also bad that data centers are now reviving coal to a degree but...

Musk paid Trump $300M for this: a House bill removing any disclosures of miles per crash, etc., currently required for self-certifying as Level 4 autonomy.

If this bill passes, it's a free pass for Tesla to roll out its deadly robotaxis from day one, unimpeded.
