As a journalist who covers extremism at the local level, I think it’s a mistake to view Trump’s Napoleonic statement as solely about presidential power. Consider if it’s interpreted as a wink and a nod for any extremist to act outside the law to “save” the country as they see fit

I don’t quite have the words to describe what just happened at HHS, on a Friday afternoon, before a holiday weekend, but it’s very very bad, and we will all be less safe and less healthy as a result.

These are long time friends and colleagues and amazing, AMAZING scientists.

This is senseless. 💔

My 7 year old has shooter drills where her table of 5 students works together to move their desks to block the door and avoid the windows, knows exactly what the drills are for, and practice calling 911 on the teachers phone in case the teacher has been shot.
Damn wow. When you put it like that . Wow …

a functional, healthy cop culture would seek to punish law-breaking criminal cops MORE harshly, recognizing that with the life-or-death authority granted to police, expectations of ethical conduct also increase. instead we get cops treating other cops as a protected, indulged mafia class

Just looked this back up for something I'm working on, and think it bears repeating.

The NYC subways are incredibly safe. What people see is not violence, but disorder.

That person (and they are a person) sleeping on the train poses very little risk, however unsettling ppl find them.
Hold up. Wait.

For airplanes--the "safest way to travel"--it takes ~6,000 years to be in a fatal accident if you flew once a day.

If you took the MTA once a day, it will currently take you almost 150 THOUSAND YEARS to be murdered (3 murders YTD out of 175M-200M rides).

MTA is SAFER THAN PLANES.

I bet more than one doctor has been tempted to write something like Cause of Death: Pneumocystis pneumonia due to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome as a consequence of the Reagan administration.
I have more than once wanted to include "insurance company denial" (and several other bitter musings) in a causal chain on a death certificate. I never did it. But I did think about it.

I was a palliative/hospice doc. So I often had long discussions with patients/families.

1. Source control, source control, source control
2. Stuff sticks to metal (and other material)
3. The drug has to get in to work (GI absorption, tissue penetration, presence of walled-off collection, etc.)
4. Antibiotics should not be anxiolytics

Air date: November 13, 1959

[Captain Allenby: C'mon Corry. Time to go home.

James A. Corry: Home?

Captain Allenby: That's right. All you're leaving behind is loneliness.

James A. Corry: I must remember that. I must remember to keep that in mind.]

We have auroras pretty much every night in the north. This one was just a straight line across the sky as far as I could see.
