Update: conversations with friends informs me that we have to keep up the fight for households with just one PWD and 1+ standard earner.

I’m collecting stories to pass on thru advocacy channels. Lmk

We can and we should land the plane on refusing legislated poverty for a handful of our neighbours.
DROP THE PHONE. FORGET EVERYTHING. THIS IS HUGE.

I have called spousal clawbacks legislated poverty for years.

So many will be able to seek gainful employment, come out from illegal rental units, can get married and file taxes together, and more!

I'm crying on the inside for my PWD friends.

Good morning. If you'd like to smile today, please visit the VictoriaBC subreddit and read the comments pooping on local white supremacists.

Shout out to @antihate.ca for their years of work. I got to meet their Executive Director and asked to hug him the first time I met him because they're great!

Thanks to @kristaloughton.bsky.social and others for making this point. Victoria is an expensive city to live in, and if we want people from all walks of life to be able to serve, council has to pay well. You shouldn't need to be wealthy to be able to serve.
Loughton: "I do think it's important to make the point that I don't believe going below $74k/year for Council pay works for anyone who's a renter who would like to serve at this table.... there's [3] renters elected at the CRD, and there's a reason for that."

Staff are recommending the rescinding of an incorrect statement of significance, then reissuing the one provided today, then move onto bylaw readings.

We're back to standard Council items now. The tax relief pilot was ratified from earlier today.

Now onto bylaws.

Cool cool cool. Just learned that my rental home is gonna go on the market. And now I'm supposed to just go back to making big decisions, compartmentalizing my looming and anxiety-inducing housing insecurity.

This is a great step forward. As a social worker I have been advising people for years to hide the fact that they're married, or in a relationship because being honest could cost them $300 a month, and PWD isn't much to start with.

But it does need to go WAY further...short🧵

Oooh we're on Gardiner's motion to alter Council's remuneration plan. "While our fellow residents are anxious about rents, mortgage... this Council is intent on enrichment for Councillors."

[Gardiner starting strong straight out the gate.]

Back from lunch. Speaking on the development potential tax relief pilot program, I said that this program is just the redistribution of local resources within a community through the municipal government as a form of state intervention. The broader problem is the way BC Assessment is told to assess.

Back to Council. Option 1 to continue the pilot is being moved, but with the addition of amending it to include the entire Downtown neighbourhood, expanding beyond Harris Green.

Caradonna motivated by referencing the business community's enthusiasm for this initiative.

We temporarily interrupt this austerity hellscape in BC to feel hope for a lil bit!
November 12, 2025 at 11:51 PM
My plans today? Not me glued to the livestream of rad Vancouverites fighting the proposed populist austerity budget. 👀

My heart goes out to the staff who maintain absolute professionalism in the face of their jobs getting cut… to benefit a small class of residents: overvalued landowners.
Y'all, I didn't realize how bad this budget motion in Vancouver was until I watched the Council meeting for the last 15 minutes. It's fundamentally massive austerity sanitized through bureaucracy.

Of note: ABC is not acknowledging their previous commitments to transparency re: providing line items.

Oct 2026 is the BC muni elections. This is a populist budget designed to whip up their base and has no vision for the long term consequences.

Nerd thread alert. Woke up this morning and started skim reading the provincially commissioned independent review of E-Comm 911, the body that handles 911 phone calls and dispatches.

Let me relate this to the police budget in #yyj, and #bcpoli more broadly.
