if LOTS of people sign up to speak and go to city hall starting Wednesday, that will prevent council from making decisions on the budget
since they are required to hear all the registered speakers first

1/ CBC & @antihate.ca released some excellent reporting on a neo-Nazi gathering in Vancouver on July 26. This thread covers more local context & organizing.
To start, here is one very interesting Facebook friendship between Exiles of the Golden Age's Lane Pommer & MP Aaron Gunn.

Nerd thread alert. Woke up this morning and started skim reading the provincially commissioned independent review of E-Comm 911, the body that handles 911 phone calls and dispatches.
Let me relate this to the police budget in #yyj, and #bcpoli more broadly.

It felt weird to speak in favour of funding book prizes in the city budget by raising literacy as a way to avoid political extremism (deep reading teaches empathy). But now I think I didn't go hard enough?

Nuremburg trials is the moderate position
He said that the agents would throw food at them to eat. The agents threatened to withhold food for a week and to beat him up if he didn't sign deportation papers. He said he saw others refuse and get beaten/receive no food. He signed because he was afraid.

Stats like this are always offered with a shrug but imagine if govs put as much energy into raising public knowledge as they do shaping public opinion.
Awareness of Budget 2025 was strong at 72%. But only 15% said they were very familiar with its contents. That gap between attention and understanding shapes much of the public reaction.

Insomnia is such a drag, friends. I can't predict if I'm going to go into my day feeling like I'm moving underwater or vibrating with manic energy. The unpredictability of my brain's ability to process anything is what is the most frustrating.

Small life update: I’m at the centre of a multimillion dollar lawsuit in Alberta launched by a failed candidate for Jason Kenney’s UCP
It may be the longest and most expensive media trial in Canadian history
I’m ready to go public about it and I want to share more details with you 🧵

Coleman speaks in favour of this.
Staff specifies that the cuts here are specifically about distribution of seedlings, not seedling growing. If proposed cuts went ahead, we would rely on residents coming to CoV facilities to pick up materials.

77% of youth in #yyj utilize the free youth bus pass program. We must protect this at all costs. Youth have already lost so much of the freedom that they would’ve had 20, 10, or even five years ago. our society has become so much more isolating and we must protect freedom of movement for youth.

Kim motivates about returning $64k to crosswalk budget. It represents approximately 1 or 2 crosswalks, and the program remains robust, so Kim seconds amendment from Alto to remove this from the budget.

Mayor Alto clarifies that any proposed reductions wouldn't touch Crystal Pool to maintain the funding envelope. In other words, Crystal Pool may "cost" the City in other services and programs.

Budget discussions at the City of Victoria really kick off this afternoon. A few thoughts.
1. Why are we facing an austerity budget? Because Council gave that direction back in March. Proof? You fucking got it.
