Am I nuts for wanting to not encourage immigration to Canada? Not because I'm anti-immigration but because I'm anti-treating-immigrants-like-garbage-until-we-fix-the-systems-meant-to-receive-them? But then... will they ever get fixed?

OK, but for some levity, the @montereybayaquarium.org has a bumpin’ YouTube channel with the best background music and visuals.

I forgot it was on at one point. I glanced at it, promptly hollering at the unexpected pinniped cutie on my screen.

Absofuckinglutely horrified.

All this while I’m seeing LMIA and TFW programs being abused by employers of all sizes and stripes in BC.

I can’t think about this too hard or I’m gonna get too angry to do anything at all.
Francisco Barahona, who has been living and working in Canada for 15 years, has been struggling to access treatment for the cancer he was diagnosed with in 2023. A hospital called immigration because he didn’t have status. He’s being deported Wednesday.

That concludes the items of business in open. We're going into closed now.

Next time we'll see you will be "hopefully at 9 o'clock, and hopefully at City Hall!"

Onto new business. 1516 Camosun/1270 and 1288 Pandora development permit with variances. "Council is considering a proposal for a 47-unit residential strata development consisting of a three-storey frontage on Pandora rising to 5 storeys towards the interior of the site and along Camosun."

Moving through more ratifications now. Advocacy resolutions for regulating carbon pollution from existing buildings, pursuing a class-action lawsuit against fossil fuel companies, etc.
February 5, 2026 at 9:11 PM
Back from lunch starting daytime Council. Going through consent agenda.

Getting back to the meaty item of unfinished business: the Evergreen Terrace BC Housing build. "the Applicant's commitment to provide a childcare space amenity during the first phase of redevelopment is no longer proposed."

More technical difficulties, so we are breaking for lunch and will be back at 1 PM.
February 5, 2026 at 7:53 PM
So we adjourn a short COTW. We're going to break for a few minutes before coming back for daytime Council.
February 5, 2026 at 7:41 PM
Moving onto items of New Business. Thompson's motions were put on the consent agenda. Caradonna's late motion for an AVICC/UBCM resolution on upholding the North Coast tanker ban is up.

Coleman is in favour but advises that it might not make the floor at UBCM, as was attempted in the past.

Back from lunch and, in a standard procedurally clever move, Mayor Alto puts forward a motion to refer the Evergreen Terrace conversation to next week in order to buy the applicant time to talk to the actual BC Housing decision-makers and give Council a chance to make a more informed decision.

Committee of the Whole concludes, and we're shifting over to Daytime Council now for ratifications and new business.
January 29, 2026 at 7:13 PM
Onto G2, Alto and Caradonna's Council Member Motion requesting funds from the Major Community Initiatives & Event Grant be allocated to Vic's Canada Day festivities.

Alto's remarks pointedly raise how BC does not contribute to the capital city's Canada Day celebrations, while other provinces do.

I'm the Council rep on the GVHA Board, and it's been eye-opening to see how much of the harbour we enjoy in the City is actually privately managed by this organization.

Board Chair spends time discussing GVHA's partnerships with Songhees and Kosapsom Nations; now intro'ing interim CEO Don Krusel.
