Thanks to @kristaloughton.bsky.social and others for making this point. Victoria is an expensive city to live in, and if we want people from all walks of life to be able to serve, council has to pay well. You shouldn't need to be wealthy to be able to serve.

Applies to more than just housing. Societally, we've largely made it impossible to build anything for a reasonable price, and we're literally and figuratively paying for it.
