Transit polls well. We use that popularity to push for more reliable and abundant transit. Let's make it better than driving.

The $113-million mess of a community centre I wrote about this week is 100% funded from “development charges.” It is going in a neighbourhood with zero population growth.

In part, these charges are a tax on newcomers to subsidize existing wealthy homeowners.

Toronto may cancel new community centres, libraries if development funding dries up - Toronto | Globalnews.ca
The city's chief financial officer reiterated that roughly $300 million had been deferred as revenue from development charges dries up, adding that some projects may be cancelled.

And to folks within the transportation world, this affects us and our work. Public transportation is the public realm. Operators, staffers, riders represent the full spectrum of Americans. Talk to folks working for Metro Transit in MN how this is impacting the transit system.

Slow-walking bus lanes? Although the City of Vancouver has promised to expand bus priority across the city, twice, these projects are getting scaled back and delayed. Promised back in 2023, deadlines are now being shifted into the unspecified future. Read the full article.

Four tricks for faster bus boarding

- More doors overall
- Multiple boarding doors
- Ticket validating and ticket purchasing machines separate, so that one person buying a ticket doesn't hold up the line
- All machines placed well inside the door, so person using the machine doesn't block the door.

It's been almost 1,000 days since @sarahkirby.bsky.social brought forward an excellent motion the bring in some bus lanes where they're needed most.

TransLink even agreed to fund it all.

So where are they? 🧐🤷

A remarkably clear eyed examination of a new freeway in Mumbai. The arguments made in this piece apply entirely to freeway projects here in Canada. As buses and trains remain overcrowded, governments invest in highway projects that will make traffic worse.

Toronto implemented bus lanes within a week of the council decision. I'd like to see Ottawa move with that same hustle.
I’ve heard from many residents frustrated at the state of the bus service in #Ottawa. They are looking for answers. This needs to be treated like an emergency watermain repair. It is a critical service that can not be allowed to flounder in this way. Two immediate solutions need to be considered:

This partnership between Bart and Uber seems designed to undermine what limited bus service already exists to these stations.
It also addresses a key challenge within the Bay Area’s transit network: providing reliable connections for people whose starting location or destination is too far to comfortably walk to a station or bus stop or is underserved by frequent bus or rail service.

A high school student was left with life-altering injuries crossing the street outside her school. Is the city doing enough to keep kids safe around schools? (Spoiler, no.) But it's fantastic seeing these high schoolers taking advocacy into their own hands! A great story, please read:

And AMO's new report shows it: homelessness in Ontario rose 8% last year, with 85,000 people becoming homeless. 20,000 were youth and children.

Horrifying.
