I’m thrilled that Victoria’s new Official Community Plan has passed! It:
✅ Increases housing choice and makes it easier to build affordable housing
✅ Adds green space / parks to every neighbourhood
✅ Targets 40% urban forest canopy coverage
✅ Adds strong tenant protections
✅ Plans for lightrail

This week, the City received an update on progress towards our 5-year housing targets.
We exceeded our housing target for year two: 882 net new units came online vs. a target of 766. We are now 48% of the way towards our 5-year targets, and are vastly exceeding our affordable housing goals.

A key component of modern right-wing political ideology is a pathological aversion to expertise, science, evidence, and professionalism.
It is batshit crazy that the Secretary of Transportation would tell pilots to “go with their gut feelings,” and then not be immediately fired.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy: "Pilots need to stop depending on air traffic controllers. They need to suck it up and go with their gut feelings."
This is the stupidest and most dangerous administration in history.

Reminder for local government (LG) budget enthusiasts - LGs are NOT permitted, by provincial law, to run an operational deficit.
We ARE allowed to take on debt for capital projects, up to a certain amount.
But we are essentially required to have a balanced budget, unlike provinces and the Feds.

Today is the first day of debating and amending Victoria’s Budget 2026.
Many people have written in with worries that we’re cutting the bike valet and free youth bus passes, and also abandoning our commitments to cycling infrastructure.
My job is to make sure these cut don’t happen. 1/2

A thread well worth reading.
1. This is a thread on freedom, and how easy it is to lose.
Over the past 2,000 years in Europe, there have been few periods and places of freedom. For much of the time we lived under highly oppressive tyrannies of various kinds, whether small or grand, local or imperial, secular or religious.🧵

I’m really pleased that, after a long relationship-building and negotiation period, the CRD and Songhees Nation have signed a Protocol Agreement.
This is a government-to-government agreement that formalizes collaboration in numerous domains (parks, utilities, archaeology, economics, planning, etc).

The Democrats need a compelling vision. Mamdani can inspire it.
✅ Universal healthcare, delivered by states
✅ Abolish ICE & reform immigration
✅ Hold authoritarians & election deniers accountable
✅ Rebuild global partnerships
✅ Depoliticize redistricting
✅ Electrify economy

My thoughts exactly. Mamdani, if plopped down in any other western country, would be a fairly run-of-the-mill social democrat -- albeit, a very charming one.
It's a testament to how right-wing the US has become that the centre left looks radical. The real radicals are the MAGA authoritarian racists

Watching Mamdani campaign on things that would be good, but mundane here in Canada and seeing the Democrats recoil from his pending victory emphasizes how different our countries are.
The framing of this is hilarious: Democrats deeply worried about the repercussions of a victory

I’m tired of the Epstein story. I hate these abusive ghouls and the attention we give to the abusers.
So I’m reading Virginia Giuffre’s autobiography. It’s an absolutely devastating account of abuse and exploitation, but an important story to hear and absorb.

Giuffre’s posthumously published memoir lays bare the life-wrecking impact of Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes – but it is also the story of how a young woman becomes a hero

The CRD has now purchased the Kapoor Lands (~4800 acres), for $33.3m, as part of our ongoing efforts to preserve our watershed.
The Kapoor Lands were a longstanding acquisition target for the CRD, as they border Sooke Lake Reserve and are crucial to the watershed. They will no longer be logged.

This is a great move by the City of Victoria to operate the YMCA/YWCA pool during the Crystal Pool construction.
This helps take pressure off Saanich’s pools and other public pools in the region.
That said the closure of pools over the years across the region is very concerning.
